LI man among 18 Penn State students charged in hazing death

Francis Olson | 09 May, 2017, 19:22

"No parents should have to deal with this".

DA announces charges against Penn.

The charges were handed down on Friday following a months-long investigation.

Barron spoke about the devastation Piazza's family has experienced and the significant problems of overconsumption of alcohol and hazing at Penn State fraternities and across the nation.

It was too late even after they chose to get him help, Parks Miller said.

A "gauntlet" is where pledges drink enormous amounts of alcohol at stations in the fraternity house.

A fraternity member testified that the objective of the gauntlet was to "get pledges drunk in a very short amount of time".

Eight of the fraternity brothers and the chapter were charged with involuntary manslaughter.

Eight fraternity members were arraigned Friday. Most were released on bonds of $100,000. His bail and preliminary hearing date were not available late Friday.

Penn State President Eric Barron said Beta Theta Pi has been banned from ever returning to the school.

The cameras recorded Piazza drinking vodka and beer at around 9:20 p.m. and an hour later needing help to walk, staggering and hunched over, from an area near the basement stairs to a couch.

Timothy Piazza fell down a flight of stairs after consuming large amount of alcohol at a pledge party.

His chest was bare, he was breathing heavily, and he had blood on his face, according to the presentment. "They thought calling for help was just unnecessary". His body appeared limp and didn't respond after liquid was poured on his face twice. Parks Miller said Piazza was a pledge of the fraternity and attended a party at the frat house on February 2.

Miller said video footage turned over to investigators provided evidence of what occurred and contradicted stories some witnesses had told.

Angela Merkel: Macron 'Carries Hopes' of Millions of Europeans
The president walked beside the 39-year-old Macron to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at the monument, where they laid a wreath. Mr Macron has said he is aiming to secure an absolute majority in the lower chamber through the June 11 and 18 elections.

"It's unusual to have a crime captured from beginning to end", she said.

The grand jury also concluded that there was an "active attempt to hide and/or destroy evidence" after Piazza was transferred to the hospital.

In one series of texts, Young wrote that the fraternity could be sued "for giving (Piazza) alcohol that contributed to his death". Young directed members to delete messages, the grand jury wrote.

The other 10 defendants, including 20-year-old Edward J. Gilmartin III, of 1737 N. Washington Ave., are not charged with manslaughter.

911 was only called hours later, the report said. "This fraternity and the culture on the Penn State campus which allowed this to take place should not take place in any university in any campus anywhere in America".

Penn State Infraternity Council released a statement in response to 18 former members of Beta Theta Pi being charged in relation to the death of Timothy Piazza.

In March, the University announced new rules for sororities and fraternities, including limiting the number of alcohol-related events.

Two of the 18 people that will face charges have roots in Lackawanna County. Fraternity brothers and the pledge class testified to those falls as well.

New court documents reveal the unsafe conditions the student and other potential members were subjected to before his death. Bream was employed by the fraternity as an adviser. Five of them face only a single count each of evidence tampering. Bream was not visible on the videotape, she said.

The cause of death was a traumatic brain injury, resulting from several falls after a night of heavy drinking, including one fall down a set of basement stairs, a county grand jury investigation found. He was about to run "the gauntlet", one of the fraternity's initiation rituals. The pledges were pressured to chug vodka, shotgun beers and drink wine, officials said. This was for a fraternity that on paper declared itself "dry" and prohibited drinking on its premises.

Michael Angelo Schiavone, Craig Heimer, Lars Kenyon, Parker Jax Yochim will be charged with reckless endangerment charges and more.

Piazza, from New Jersey, fell multiple times during a Beta Theta Pi pledge party at the university and died two days after being taken to hospital on 4 February this year.
