Firing Fallout: Media Jump on Trump for Dumping Comey

Kenny Thornton | 10 May, 2017, 14:31

The top Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, said on Tuesday that the committee can conduct a credible investigation of Russia's alleged meddling in the 2016 USA election, despite President Donald Trump's firing of FBI Director James Comey. "It would be politically suicidal to try to quash this investigation".

He has confirmed that the agency is investigating Russian interference in last year's presidential election and notably Moscow's possible collusion with Trump's campaign.

The President on Wednesday (Australian time) sacked Mr Comey, on the advice of his Attorney-General Jeff Sessions, over his handling of the probe into Hillary Clinton's emails previous year.

On Tuesday, legislators on both sides of the aisle called for an independent body to investigate.

He also said he was open to the idea of a special prosecutor or special counsel, adding that it would not interfere with congressional investigations.

"That fig leaf explanation seeks to cover the undeniable truth: The president has removed the sitting FBI director in the midst of one of the most critical national security investigations in the history of our country - one that implicates senior officials in the Trump campaign and administration", he charged.

"I must be out of my mind to be following Bob Mueller,"' he said at the time.

And it was before Comey publicly confirmed in March that the Federal Bureau of Investigation since last summer had been investigating contacts between the Trump campaign and Russian officials.

Rosenstein is a well-respected former US attorney, who was nominated to that post by President George W. Bush but has served in both Republican and Democratic administrations.

With his offspin, Root then took team-best bowling figures of 3-52 from 10 overs as Ireland was dismissed for 243 in 46.1 overs. It's been a slower start to the season than I would have liked but this has been a stepping stone into the Champions Trophy.

Comey's abrupt dismissal is still raising eyebrows, as the reasoning provided by Department of Justice officials - referring to his conduct during investigations into Hillary Clinton's emails- is largely considered something the Trump administration already knew about when they chose to retain him in the position in January.

As the deputy attorney general, Comey rushed to the hospital bed of Attorney General John Ashcroft to physically stop White House officials in their bid to get his ailing boss to reauthorize a secret no-warrant wiretapping program. In particular, top Clinton campaign staffers, many of whom - along with the candidate herself - believe his "October surprise" helped deliver Trump the White House. The FBI chief had been part of a delegation of intelligence and security officials who went to Trump Tower in December to brief the president-elect on evidence that Russian Federation had interfered in the election in an effort to help Trump win.

The probe, though, might slow down in the short term.

Trump said that while he'd had concerns about Comey for some time, it was the FBI's "clarification" of Comey's inaccurate Senate testimony last week about Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server that raised new questions about the director's competence and judgment. "You're looking at the wrong set of facts here", Conway told Cooper.

It is longstanding Justice Department protocol to avoid taking investigative action in the run-up to an election that could affect its outcome.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California, the top Democrat on the Judiciary Committee, said Trump called her Tuesday afternoon to inform her of his decision. He also noted that Comey's firing would "raise questions".

November 13, 2016: In a CBS "60 Minutes" broadcast after the election, Trump said he hadn't decided whether to keep Comey.

"But what he did", Trump continued, "was the right thing". "My impression is that the director, while being a leader for the organization, doesn't come down into the weeds and direct behavior, so I'm hopeful they'll continue on the track".

Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC) released a statement on the Comey decision Tuesday night: "Throughout his career, Director Comey has served the nation with distinction, and I have found him to be professional and responsive during my interactions with him".
