New Hamas chief makes first public appearance in native Gaza

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu slammed two USA media outlets - CNN and The New York Times - for disseminating false reports about a document from Hamas, the largest of several Palestinian militant Islamist groups.

Gaza, (Alresalah.ps)- Member of Hamas political bureau Osama Hamdan stated that Ismail Haniyeh is the new chairman of Hamas political bureau and he will succeed Khaled Meshaal.

Meanwhile Fatah congratulated Haniyeh on his election as the Hamas chief but said it expected him to hand over the Gaza Strip to the Palestinian government.

Last week, Hamas unveiled a series of additions to its charter that expressed support for establishing a provisional Palestinian state in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip - seen as a tacit acceptance of Israel.

After his release in 1992, Haniyeh along with other senior Hamas leaders and over 400 other activists were deported to South Lebanon, where they spent more than a year camped at Marj al-Zahour near the Palestinian-Lebanese borders.

Al-Kieli also said that the order was unfair to Gaza, and is simply part of Abbas' efforts to prevent funding from reaching Hamas. This is Haniyeh, the Gazan Hamas terror leader who has risen in the ranks to head the Hamas political bureau.

On April 17, more than 1,000 Palestinian prisoners held by Israel began an open-ended hunger strike to demand more prison visits, better medical care, and improved treatment of female inmates.

A further modification in the Hamas stance is that it abandons describing its struggle as one against the "Jews", as in the 1988 Charter, and instead concentrates on the Zionists and the "Zionist entity".

Sidewalk Labs may build a smart city hub in Toronto
Sidewalk Labs has discussed creating an entire micro-city or district that could showcase the company's ideas for urban planning. A Sidewalk Labs representative declined to comment on whether the company has submitted a bid.

This shift comes at a time of growing financial pressure on the territory by Hamas' main rival, Western-backed Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, who in recent weeks has been trying to force the group to cede ground in Gaza.

CNN's headline on the new Hamas document reads: "Hamas says it accepts '67 borders, but doesn't recognize Israel".

"Ismail Haniya is the most appropriate person to promote this document to Arab and worldwide leaders", said Gaza political scientist Mukhaimer Abu Saada.

Another hamas leader, ahmed yousef, told agence france-presse (afp) the updated charter was "more moderate, more measured and would help protect us against accusations of racism, anti-semitism and breaches of worldwide law".

Ismail Haniya and his family have always lived in the Gaza Strip.

Its creed had its roots in the Muslim Brotherhood, which was founded by Hassan Al-Banna in Egypt in the late 1920s, and not in the Palestinian national movement.

The following year, he led Hamas to a shock legislative election victory over Abbas's Fatah and became prime minister. (Read for free (right now) over half of this book as an e-book on this website.) It is just one more of many developments that have occurred ever since this book's publication in 1990, now twenty-seven years ago, in which I predict that a Palestinian state will be created in the coastal plain only, with the Gaza Strip as its center. This is a move in the right direction for Hamas.
