Robert Powelson, a Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) member from Chester county, will be nominated by President Donald Trump to serve on the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC). The term of Colette Honorable, the only other current commissioner, ends in June and she has announced she will not seek another term but could stay on until her replacement gains approval from the Senate. Both must be confirmed by the Senate. Pending U.S. Senate approval, the two men will restore the agency's power to rule on matters ranging from natural gas and transmission policy to how large-scale wind and solar is valued in interstate grid markets. Commissioner Powelson was renominated by Governor Rendell for a full five-year term on February 12, 2009, and again unanimously confirmed by the Pennsylvania Senate on April 22, 2009. Prior to serving McConnell, Chatterjee worked as a principal in government relations for the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association and as an aide to House Republican Conference Chairwoman Deborah Pryce of Ohio.

"The president, and many members of Congress, have stressed the economic importance of developing infrastructure across America".

Among the issues he will likely deal with are Trump's plans to allow the construction of the Keystone pipeline to carry crude oil from Canada to Texas, which was stopped by former President Barack Obama, and several gas pipeline projects.

Only two commissioners now serve on the five-member panel, leaving it without a quorum and unable to make decisions on interstate pipelines and other projects worth billions of dollars.

"We can't do much of anything in the energy space until there is a functioning quorum at the FERC. The nomination of these individuals to serve at FERC will mark a step toward improving the nation's energy infrastructure", Santa added. But major issues, including permitting for major gas pipeline projects, have been tabled until the commission regains a quorum. "Together, they bring a wealth of experience in different regulatory aspects of the energy industry".

Democrat Cheryl LaFleur is the commission's acting chairwoman, but Trump is widely expected to name a Republican to replace her. LaFleur would still serve on the commission.

FERC officials on Tuesday said they couldn't comment on when the Senate might confirm Trump's nominees, and pointed The White House has only announced its intent to nominate commission members.

Trump was said to be planning to name Kevin McIntyre, co-head of Jones Day's global energy practice, as his pick to lead the agency.

By law, no more than three members of FERC may be from the same political party.

"For too long, FERC has merely served as a pit stop for the fossil fuel industry on its way to constructing dirty energy infrastructure, rather fulfilling their duty to adequately investigate the need for projects and the dangers they pose".
