House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi flew with a bipartisan delegation to the Himalayan hill town where the 81-year-old Buddhist leader is based.

Earlier, the U.S. delegation was received at the Gaggal airport near here by Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) secretary of International Relations Sonam Dagpo and information secretary Dhardon Shearling. A 16-year-old student, chanting "Tibet wants freedom" and "Let His Holiness the Dalai Lama come back to Tibet", burned himself to death on May 2, Radio Free Asia's Tibetan service has reported. "We come on this visit to be inspired by His Holiness and demonstrate our commitment to the Tibetan people, to their faith, their culture and their language".

During the two day visit, the delegation will meet Dalai Lama and Tibetan government-in-exile President Lobsang Sangay. The delegation's tour of the TGIE headquarters is part of its "visits to India, Nepal, Germany and Belgium focusing on national security, global economy, bilateral and multilateral relations, and human rights", according to a press release issued by the office of the Leader of the Democratic Party in US House.

China views the Dalai Lama, who fled to India from Tibet in 1959 after an unsuccessful uprising against China, as a separatist. When asked to comment on Trump getting cosier with Chinese president, he said: "Does not matter". Find us on Facebook too! "It is a big thing for Tibetans that a bipartisan delegation is here".

China took control of Tibet in 1950 in what it calls a "peaceful liberation" and has piled pressure on foreign governments to shun the Dalai Lama.

The bi-partisan group is scheduled to meet with leaders of the Exile Tibetan Administration and other civic leaders from the Tibetan community. Well placed sources said that it held a separate meeting with Tibetan women leaders here. They had dinner at the Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts (TIPA).
