Why is Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) Hiring 3000 Content Reviewers?

Kayla Schwartz | 11 May, 2017, 03:43

Facebook is planning to hire thousands of people to help review user content following multiple high-profile incidents of people sharing videos of suicide and murder. An additional 3,000 people would mean that 7,500 people would be devoted to taking down offensive content. "It's heartbreaking, and I've been reflecting on how we can do better for our community".

"As a result of this awful series of events, we are reviewing our reporting flows to be sure people can report videos and other material that violates our standards as easily and quickly as possible", said Facebook in their statement.

Revenge porn, a new tool unleashed by Facebook across all its platforms like Messenger and Instagram. "We immediately reached out to law enforcement, and they were able to prevent him from hurting himself", said Mr Zuckerberg. Soon after, a man in Thailand posted a video of himself murdering his infant daughter before committing suicide.

Zuckerberg said Facebook will add 3,000 employees to their community operations team - now 4,500 employees - who will help review reported posts faster.

The video shocked the nation and added insult to an already horrific injury for the family, who had their loved one's death broadcast online. The horrific video remained live on the social media platform for approximately 24 hours before being removed. The move will hopefully "improve the process for doing it quickly", Zuckerberg said. The tools were partly in response to a 14-year-old girl from Miami who killed herself while live streaming on Facebook in January.

The hiring spree represents an acknowledgement by Facebook that, at least for now, it needs more than automated software to improve monitoring of broadcasts on Facebook Live, a service that has been marred since its launch past year by instances of people streaming violence.

The new reviewers - who join 4,500 current moderators - will work to remove posts that include hate speech and child exploitation, while working with community groups and law enforcement agencies who are in the best position to help someone if needed.
