Acting FBI chief Andrew McCabe: James Comey firing won't stop Russian Federation probe

Laurie Berry | 12 May, 2017, 11:39

McCabe, who took over on a temporary basis after Comey's surprising ousting on Tuesday, appeared before the Senate Intelligence Committee on Thursday. As chairman of the Senate intelligence committee, Burr is leading one of the three congressional investigations and has been in regular contact with Comey.

On Wednesday, the White House said Mr Comey had been fired by President Trump partly because he had lost the confidence of Federal Bureau of Investigation staff.

Despite top Democrats accusing Rosenstein of undermining the FBI's Russian Federation probe, Sanders says such bipartisan support negates the need for a special prosecutor.

The House Intelligence Committee's top Democrat, Adam Schiff, echoed those concerns, saying the dismissal "raises profound questions about whether the White House is brazenly interfering in a criminal matter". "We have a House investigation by our Intelligence Committee which is the appropriate committee to do that, I believe, and we have the Senate Intelligence Committee...and you have the FBI investigating all things Russian Federation".

The dinner, the president said, was because Comey "wanted to stay on". "It is my opinion and belief that the FBI will continue to pursue this investigation vigorously and completely".

Mr McCabe also assured senators that he will alert them to any effort to interfere with the investigation into Russia's election meddling and possible ties with Donald Trump's campaign.

Trump also completely contradicted statements made by Vice President Mike Pence the day before about Comey's dismissal during his interview with Holt.

Trump's story aligns with a claim he made in a letter to Comey on Tuesday dismissing the director. At her Wednesday briefing, Sanders said the FBI "is doing a whole lot more than the Russian Federation investigation", and that even though the media "would like to think that's the FBI's sole responsibility...that's probably one of the smallest things that they've got going on their plate".

US needs 'good shutdown' in September to fix mess
Some conservatives applauded Trump's call for ending the supermajority needed in the Senate to pass major legislation. The measure will spare a damaging government shutdown , but it has left out many of Trump's biggest policy requests.

"In ordering you to write the memo", the Times says, Trump "exploited the integrity you have earned over almost three decades in public service, spending down your credibility as selfishly as he has spent other people's money throughout his business career".

Defending the firing, White House officials said Trump's confidence in Comey had been eroding for months.

He added, "Comey lost the confidence of nearly everyone in Washington, Republican and Democrat alike".

He went on to detail the occasions when Comey told him he was in the clear. We are a large organization. That memo cited Comey's mishandling of the investigation into Hillary Clinton's secret email server as the primary cause for a loss of confidence.

NBC News added that "it would be highly unusual" for someone who is the focus of an FBI probe to ask if he were under investigation and be directly told by the FBI director that he was not.

However, he wrote, "a new AG and new director may take a good look at the entire case, and if anyone who received immunity did not live up to their agreement, like Huma [Abedin] with the classified documents on her computer, the deal is off and they are potential targets again".

But Comey associates pushed back on the idea that Comey assured Trump he wasn't under investigation.
