BC candidate requests recount in Comox riding he lost by nine votes

BC NDP's Garry Begg has been elected in the riding of Surrey Guildford BC candidate requests recount in Comox riding he lost by nine votes

Minority governments are inherently unstable and if the B.C. government falls, the Greens' success last night and likely lack of success implementing a green program in partnership with a development-oriented right-wing government will probably have two impacts.

The popular vote on Tuesday gave the Liberals about 17,800 more votes than the New Democrats.

Several Liberal cabinet ministers lost seats in Metro Vancouver, including Attorney General Suzanne Anton, Technology Minister Amrik Virk and Peter Fassbender, the minister responsible for TransLink.

Reflecting a deepening rural-urban divide, the Liberals won 43 of the province's 87 electoral ridings, or districts, just shy of the 44 needed to form a majority.

However the final vote count will not be completed tonight.

Those were three of the four ridings that could realistically flip when over 176,000 absentee ballots are counted by May 24, according to Milligan's modelling.

During the campaign all three parties professed support for mining, especially the continuation of flow-through tax credits.

"If it's true that British Columbians voted for a change, that must mean, if you're Andrew Weaver, ousting Christy Clark from government", Johnston said Wednesday.

But whether Clark remains at the helm beyond the first confidence vote of the opening session of the mandate or not, or even if she ends up clinging to a razor-thin majority, it will hardly be business as usual. (CBC published this primer and the Globe has this useful explainer.) Still, considering the uncertainty of this election outcome, headlines suggesting a Liberal "win" are more than just inaccurate - they're irresponsible. "We have a lot of folks in our Valley that go down south and we caught a lot of them before they left, and they mail-in their ballots, and there's a lot to count, and with nine votes in the mix I think it's worth waiting for".

Clark offered only tepid support for the plan. The Liberals have also presided over five consecutive balanced budgets.

Even though we won't know for another few weeks the official results of British Columbia's squeaker election, we can draw a few conclusions already. Because we don't know. "They want us to work across party lines".

Former FBI Director Comey Has Deep Ties to NY
Deputy Director Andrew McCabe is to serve as acting head of the Federal Bureau of Investigation until a replacement is confirmed. The White House has vigorously defended the decision to remove Mr Comey despite condemnation from both parties in Washington .

Horgan, whose party was heavily outspent in advertising by the BC Liberals, was still holding out hope he would become premier. "British Columbians voted today for proportional representation". Hillsborough Resources suspended the Vancouver Island underground operation in January 2016 due to low prices. "Now is not the time for those discussions".

If he were to do that alone, it would be an achievement the Greens could live on for quite some time. While recounts are ongoing, Liberal Christy Clark appears headed toward a minority government.

Clark and her supporters said they were willing to work with anyone, including Weaver, for good government but how many of those above items would she agree to in order to secure support from the Greens party? But Weaver has also hinted that on economic issues his party sides with the Liberals. But one thing he said he wouldn't compromise on - a ban on corporate and union contributions to political parties.

Both leaders are in communication with Weaver. "I'm proud of putting a positive campaign together with local issues", he said.

Poll workers had to intervene when a man approached Clark yelling insults.

"I thought they would move away from her", said Sigurdson, adding the close results also showed the diversity of the B.C. population.

But premier Clark is the big loser. Horgan accused her of being out of touch with average people on issues such as the cost of housing and inadequate education funding.

Now the election battle shifts to critical political decisions by Andrew Weaver and John Horgan. He told voters his party is the only one offering something that's different on climate change and on preparing the province for a new economy spurred by technological change. The NDP has promised to ban the donations, while the Liberals have said they'll convene a review panel. Clark vowed if re-elected to ban thermal coal exports from BC in retaliation for U.S. duties on Canadian softwood lumber.
