Netflix boss Reed Hastings isn't happy with a recent rule change for the Cannes Film Festival regarding distribution - even though his streaming platform got a pass for this year, at least.

"The Meyerowitz Stories", directed by Noah Baumbach, and Bong Joon-ho's "Okja", both produced by Netflix are participating in the festival, which begins May 17. Furthermore, France's Media Chronology Law decrees that films must remain off of streaming services within three years of their theatrical release in France; Netflix, however, plans to release Okja and The Meyerowitz Stories for streaming shortly after their Cannes debuts.

The film festival made a decision to change the rules after facing pressure from French theatre owners who have raised their concerns over Netflix films being allowed to enter the festival without being shown in French theatres. "The festival regrets that no agreement has been reached". According to Variety, the festival has decided that's okay-for now. "This new measure will apply from the 2018 edition of the Festival International du Film de Cannes onwards".

He said: "See Okja (a new a sc-fi thriller) on Netflix June 20th".

The Cannes Film Festival, the world's most glamorous and prestigious film competition, has enjoyed its fair share of blazing rows.

This is the latest chapter in the tug of war Netflix has between delivering content to its subscribers and trying to build clout within Hollywood.

Snapchat slapped: $6bn wiped off value as shares collapse
Investors are anxious that Snapchat will continue to falter as Facebook (NASDAQ:FB) continues to target the app's audience. The fast-talking Spiegel seemed to especially enjoy a question about Facebook copying Snapchat features.

The film reportedly bombed, with Netflix taking the highly unusual step of not releasing its box office figures.

The move angered streaming services such as Netflix, which now has two films in contention for the coveted Palme d'Or.

"While France's exhibitors are neither questioning the independence of the programming of the world's biggest film festival, nor the emerging of new worldwide players such as Amazon which are contributing to the development and financing of films, we are contesting the festival's choice which was made without consulting us", the FNCF said.

This year's festival also includes television series and virtual reality, but those works aren't playing in competition. However, Amazon has so far shown more willingness than Netflix to release its films in cinemas, such as the Oscar-winning Manchester By The Sea.

Screening a film at Cannes is an vast honor and a sign that you've been accepted by the industry's elite. "However, I don't think you can force people to consume things in a certain way anymore", he said. The theatrical experience is changing dramatically.
