Senate panel seeks Michael Flynn documents in Russia probe

Sen. Lindsey Graham asks a question as former acting Attorney General Sally Yates testifies about potential Russian interference in the presidential election before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Capitol Hill Senate panel seeks Michael Flynn documents in Russia probe

The Senate Intelligence Committee late Wednesday issued a subpoena to former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn for documents relating to his contacts with Russian officials.

Comey was leading the bureau's investigation - a separate probe to that of the Senate intelligence committee - into alleged Russian collusion.

In a joint statement on Wednesday (11 May), Senators Richard Burr, the committee's Republican chairman, and Mark Warner, its top-ranking Democrat, announced the subpoena after Flynn failed to meet the original 9 May deadline.

In an email, Mr Flynn's lawyer Robert Kelner said they had no comment at this time on the subpoena.

Sally Yates, who was originally appointed by the Obama administration, told a Senate Judiciary subcommittee that she felt Pence "was entitled to know" he was relaying incorrect information about Flynn to the American public.

Many Democrats and a few Republicans found the timing of the firing suspect, since it comes as the FBI is investigating Trump's campaign and transition team for alleged collusion with Russian Federation.

The White House maintained that James Comey was removed on Tuesday for his handling of the inquiry over Hillary Clinton's emails.

They targeted people who worked with Flynn on contracts after he was pushed out of his job as director of the Defense Intelligence Agency in 2014, it reported.

Copies of request letters sent to long-time Trump associate Roger Stone and former foreign policy adviser Carter Page were shared with the Associated Press. Flynn had previously been in talks with the committee about agreeing to be interviewed as long as he was granted immunity.

In testimony before the House intelligence committee in March, Comey testified that the FBI was investigating possible collusion between Trump associates and Russian officials and other Russians known to U.S. intelligence as part of its broader, ongoing counter-intelligence investigation.

Yates also cited the possibility that Flynn could have broken federal law by operating as a paid foreign agent for the Turkish client without US government permission. But Turkish businessman Ekim Alptekin has told the AP that the payments from Flynn's firm were refunds for unperformed lobbying.
