Trump says he was always going to fire Federal Bureau of Investigation director

Freda Brock | 12 May, 2017, 07:46

The White House hasn't contradicted its own explanation just because it can't keep a story straight; the problem is that constant leaks from within the White House, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and Congress have made it clear that the White House's initial explanation was a lie.

"NBC Nightly News" anchor Lester Holt asked Trump about the timing of Comey's dismissal and the president's meeting on Monday with Attorney General Jeff Sessions and his deputy, Rod Rosenstein.

In an interview with MSNBC on Wednesday, she argued that Trump should not have fired Comey in the middle of the Russian Federation probe and as a result "basically has interfered with an investigation where he may be implicated". "I said 'If it's possible, will you let me know, am I under investigation?' He said 'You are not under investigation, '" Trump said.

It was unclear whether word of the Comey request, said to have been put to Rosenstein, ever made its way to Trump.

"The world of the men and women of the FBI continues despite any changes in circumstances", acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe told the Senate Intelligence Committee Thursday.

Others, including conservative Ben Shapiro, called out the alleged hypocrisy.

"To restore my faith, I am going to have to sit down and talk to him and get an explanation for why he did this", he added.

"I can not defend the Director's handling of the conclusion of the investigation of Secretary Clinton's emails, and I do not understand his refusal to accept the almost universal judgement that he was mistaken", Rosenstein wrote.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders told reporters Thursday that it was appropriate for Trump to ask Comey about the ongoing investigation. She said legal scholars, who she didn't name, saw no issue with the president's inquiries.

He was part of the team investigating the so-called Whitewater scandal during Bill Clinton's presidency, and gained the trust of both sides for his integrity.

Defending the firing, White House officials said Trump's confidence in Comey had been eroding for months.

"I do not have confidence in him any longer", Schumer told Bloomberg on November 2.

The national, online survey polled 1,731 registered voters from May 9-11 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 2 percentage points.

Mr Trump also revealed to NBC News it was his decision to sack Mr Comey. Multiple reports have indicated that Comey met with Committee Chairman Burr and Vice Chairman Mark Warner to inform them that he would be requesting further resources with which to conduct the investigation from Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who drafted the memo that led to Comey's dismissal; the meeting between Rosenstein and Comey took place shortly before Comey was sacked.

While the White House has repeatedly said the FBI no longer had confidence in Comey, McCabe said the bureau had his back.

Former Republican congressman Mike Rogers is being considered as a candidate to replace Comey, a senior White House official said. You know that; I know that; everybody knows that. "Serious doubt has been cast on Mr. Rosenstein's impartiality for two reasons".

The contradicting portrayals of Comey raised further questions about Trump's motivations for firing him. It comes just as the FBI appeared to be ramping up its investigation of Trump associates' ties to Russian Federation. Comey also publicly dismissed Trump's claim that former President Barack Obama spied on him.
