8-year-old boy bullied at school days before killing himself

Francis Olson | 14 May, 2017, 22:52

An 8-year-old student in OH killed himself earlier this year, two days after he was allegedly bullied at school.

At the time of his death, school officials at Carson Elementary School claimed there was no evidence of bullying.

A Cincinnati schools spokeswoman says the video might be released Friday. The video, which you can judge for yourself below, was recorded on January 24.

Gabriel's mother says the school contacted her to say her son had fainted, but it did not tell her about the peer incident, the Inquirer reports. The boy lay unconscious for 7 1/2 minutes before an assistant principal and school nurse came to his aid.

His mother, Cornelia Reynolds spoke days after his death and questioned if school leaders were taking action to prevent bullying.

On Thursday, Hamilton County Coroner Lakshmi Sammarco told a local radio station that her office is reopening the investigation into Gabriel's death.

"Maybe this had been going on for years, and she had no idea, so she couldn't help him", Branch told Fox 19. Once at the hospital a doctor diagnosed Gabriel with a stomach virus and sent him home with his mother, reports the Chicago Tribune.

Gabriel Taye, 8, took his own life two days after being allegedly kicked and struck by his classmates at his public school in Cincinnati, OH, according to the surveillance footage obtained by attorneys. Although the school didn't disclose the nature of the incident at that time, they did advise the mother to take him to the hospital "to be checked out", as reported by the New York Post.

Gabriel, the statement said, "was an outstanding young man, and this is a great loss for his family and our school community".

President Donald Trump pledged to withdraw the U.S. from the 2015 Paris climate accord but has yet to make a formal decision. The document, which calls for action to blunt the thawing of the Arctic, was dubbed the Fairbanks Declaration.

The district's statement Friday followed release of the video showing Gabriel Taye being bullied and falling to the floor unconscious.

Gabriel's mother said through her lawyer, Jennifer Branch of Cincinnati, that no one at Carson told her about the assault when she collected Gabriel that day.

Cincinnati Public Schools is reviewing with faculty and staff the procedures regarding adult supervision in the restrooms, and is committed to student safety, the district's statement said. She also stated that Reynolds took Gabriel to the hospital that night for what she assumed was the stomach flu after he complained of stomach pain. The bully hits one child, sending him to his hands and knees, then pushes Gabriel into a wall about a minute later.

About a dozen people, mostly parents, showed up in front of Carson School Friday morning with signs to protest bullying.

Sammarco, the coroner, said she wants to know more about the incident, too.

An Ohio coroner has reopened an investigation into the death of an 8-year-old boy to examine security-camera video from the boy's school which police say shows the boy getting bullied two days before he died by suicide.

Gabriel was found dead in January after he hanged himself with a necktie in his Cincinnati home, according to the attorney.

Leader said Gabriel had no history of mental health issues and described him as a happy-go-lucky kid. "She's devastated that her son's second-to-last day was so painful for him and that she didn't know and that she couldn't protect him".
