"Humorously at this point we had unknowingly killed the malware". Huss took a screen shot of his discovery and shared it on Twitter.

Affected by the onslaught were computer networks at hospitals in Britain, Russia's interior ministry, the Spanish telecom giant Telefonica and the U.S. delivery firm FedEx and many other organisations. It's not uncommon for them to use aliases, either to protect themselves from retaliatory attacks or for privacy.

The global ransomware attack came a day after President Donald Trump signed an executive order aimed at tightening US cybersecurity.

Russia's Interior Ministry released a statement Friday acknowledging a ransomware attack on its computers, adding that less than 1% of computers were affected, and that the virus was now "localized" and being destroyed.

According to Matthew Hickey, founder of the security firm Hacker House, the attack is not surprising, and it shows many organizations do not apply updates in a timely fashion.

South Korea's Yonhap news agency reported a university hospital had been affected, while a communications official in Indonesia said two hospitals there had been hit.

And WannaCry has already caused massive disruption around the globe.

The malicious software behind the onslaught appeared to exploit a vulnerability in Microsoft Windows that was supposedly identified by the National Security Agency for its own intelligence-gathering purposes and was later leaked to the internet.

Sixteen National Health Service (NHS) organizations in the United Kingdom have been hit, and some of those hospitals have canceled outpatient appointments and told people to avoid emergency departments if possible. English hospitals and a Spanish telecom seemed to be hardest hit.

French carmaker Renault's assembly plant in Slovenia halted production after it was targeted in the global cyberattack. In Brazil, the social security system had to disconnect its computers and cancel public access.

Fedex said Friday it was "experiencing interference with some of our Windows-based systems caused by malware" and was trying to fix the problems as quickly as possible.

Upon learning of EternalBlue's origin, Microsoft promptly released a patch in March to suture the vulnerability, but now it appears hackers took advantage of targets - such as hospitals - that had yet to update their systems.

Korea launches another missile, reaching 435 miles
On Sunday, Chinese leader Xi Jinping launched a major trade and infrastructure summit with multiple world leaders in Beijing. The US calculated that the missile landed in water 60 miles south of Russia's Vladivostok region, a US official told CNN .

In response to the attacks against the UK's National Health Service, Home Secretary Amber Rudd is set to chair an emergency Cobra crisis-committee meeting to cordinate a government response to the incident.

Britain's home secretary says about one in five National Health Service trusts have been hit by the global ransomware cyberattack, and that all but six are now back to normal.

Researchers said the worm deployed in the latest attack, or similar tools released by Shadow Brokers, are likely to be used for fresh assaults not just with ransomware but other malware to break into firms, seize control of networks and steal data.

Ransomware attacks and other computer intrusions, such as the hacking incident that unfolded in France last week on the eve of that country's presidential election, are on the rise throughout the world. "A request for $600 in Bitcoin is displayed along with the wallet - and the ransom demand increases over time", Altaf Halde, Managing Director Kaspersky Lab (South Asia), told IANS.

Security experts from Kaspersky Lab and Avast Software say Russian Federation was the hardest hit, followed by Ukraine and Taiwan.

The worldwide cyberextortion attack has been called "unprecedented" by Europol, which is investigating who is behind it.

"Global internet security has reached a moment of emergency", Qihoo360 warned.

"I think the security industry as a whole should be considered heroes", he said.

This is not just a rapidly spreading attack, but also one with a profit motive.

Symantec researcher Vikram Thakur said that total fix costs are likely to be in the tens of millions of dollars. IT teams with these type of platforms need to act quickly and implement the update to enable them to operate safely next week. His action couldn't help those already infected, however.

Short of paying, options for individuals and companies affected are to recover data files from a backup, if available, or to live without them.
