Trump said Saturday that he could name a new director by Friday, when he departs on his first foreign trip as president to Saudi Arabia, Israel, Italy and Belgium.

Trump, as he spoke before the Christian university, dubbed the criticism of his actions as a sign that he was "doing honourable work in remarks that touched upon religion but were not particularly imbued with religious overtones", CNN reports.

Falwell is credited with helping Trump win an overwhelming 80 percent of the white evangelical vote.

"I really don't think any other president has done more for evangelicals and the faith community in four months than President Trump has", Falwell told The Associated Press in a telephone interview on Friday.

Overall, the speech lacked fireworks, a rarity for a Trump gathering.

"Right here, the Class of 2017, dressed in cap and gown, graduating to a totally brilliant future; and here I am, standing before you as president of the United States".

"In America, we don't worship government", Trump declared at one point. A crowd of more than double that size filled an outdoor stadium on campus to welcome just the second sitting president to address the university's commencement. "Embrace that label. Being an outsider is fine".

He occasionally sounded self-reflective as he imparted wisdom to the graduates. Trump said he was reaching out to "very well known" candidates, calling them "outstanding people". "And always have the courage to be yourself".

In a commencement speech given earlier today at Liberty University, Donald Trump said, "The future belongs to the dreamers, not the critics".

"As long as I'm your president", Trump promised to loud applause, "no one is ever going to stop you from practicing your faith or preaching what's in your heart."

Trump's remarks Saturday on the Lynchburg, Virginia, campus will mark his first extended public appearance since he fired James Comey as Federal Bureau of Investigation director this week.

He steered clear of that subject, making only sidelong swipes at his critics. "Nothing is easier or more pathetic than being a critic".

Trump has spoken at Liberty University before.

Christian conservatives have been overjoyed by Trump's appointment of Justice Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court, along with Trump's choice of socially conservative Cabinet members and other officials, such as Charmaine Yoest, a prominent anti-abortion activist named to the Department of Health and Human Services.

Falwell said he's pleased with Trump's performance so far.

US President Donald Trump on Saturday said he has seen first-hand how the system is broken in Washington DC in a short span of little over 100 days of his presidency.

Lanora Hale came from Millville, N.J., to watch her son graduate with a master's degree. "People gotta give him a chance", Hale said.

Trump has stayed largely out of public view since Tuesday.

Newly-minted elementary education graduate Rachel Kreisel of Boca Raton, Fla., agrees. The White House dispatched Vice President Mike Pence to the Notre Dame commencement Saturday.

"He's certainly been busy", Kirkland said, "both in the office and on Twitter".
