Experts say the spread of the virus had been stymied by a security researcher in the United Kingdom hackers have issued new versions of the virus that cyber security organizations are actively trying to counter and stamp out.

PEOPLE have been warned to expect some disruption to GP services today (Monday) as IT and clinical systems are brought back online following the cyber attack which took place on Friday (May 12).

Rudd said the government did not know if the attack was directed by a foreign government. "So they no longer get the security updates they should be".

"It spread very, very quickly", Smith said. The ransomware was created to repeatedly contact an unregistered domain in its code.

MalwareTech, who wants to remain anonymous, was hailed as an "accidental hero" after registering a domain name to track the spread of the virus, which actually ended up halting it.

"We have stopped this one, but there will be another one coming and it will not be stoppable by us".

Telefónica: Spanish authorities confirmed the Spanish telecom company Telefónica was one of the targets, though the attack affected only some computers and did not compromise the security of clients' information.

Mr. Bhattathirippad, a cyber detective who is often hired by the police and other investigating agencies, suspects that the Wannacry attack could be a case of corporate terrorism.

This certainly is a "wake up call" for governments.

"This exploit is named as ETERNALBLUE", an advisory issued by the CERT-In, accessed by PTI, said. "It's a big priority of mine that we protect the financial infrastructure", he said.

The "Wannacry" virus locks users out of their computers and demands hundreds of dollars from victims hoping to regain control of their documents and data. The exploit was leaked last month as part of a trove of NSA spy tools.

A lawyer for Millicent man Bo Krister Olsson, 53, did not seek bail for his client, who was remanded in custody until late July. The incident was not considered a random attack, with the man and his victims known to each other, police say.

Technical staff scrambled yesterday to patch computers and restore infected ones.

But the patches won't do any good for machines that have already been hit. "Most folks that have paid up appear to have paid the initial $300 in the first few hours".

The effects were felt around the globe, disrupting computers that run factories, banks, government agencies and transport systems in nations as diverse as Russia, Ukraine, Brazil, Spain, India and the U.S. Britain's National Health Service was hit hard, while Russia's Interior Ministry and companies including Spain's Telefonica, FedEx the U.S. and French carmaker Renault all reported disruptions. "The fact is the NHS has fallen victim to this", she said.

Companies including Hitachi and Nissan Motor Co. reported problems but said they said had not seriously affected their business operations.

Payment is demanded within three days or the price is doubled, and if none is received within seven days the files will be deleted, according to the screen message.

"Global internet security has reached a moment of emergency", Qihoo360 warned.

On Saturday a former head of the body managing the NHS' cyber security system said an online attack on the health service was "always going to happen".

More than 75,000 similar attacks reportedly happened in nearly 100 countries, with Russia, Ukraine and Taiwan hardest hit, according to the cybersecurity firm Avast.

When asked about the security of the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems (CCTNS), Singh said, "Luckily, the system we use (in CCTNS) is linux-based, hence it has not at all been affected".

Consumers who have up-to-date software are protected from this ransomware.
