Liverpool one step closer to Champions League

Rita Gibson | 16 May, 2017, 13:17

Liverpool football club thrashed West Ham United 4-0 in week 37 of English Premier League (EPL) action at the London Stadium, boosting its hopes of qualifying for the next edition of the Champions League.

Liverpool put four past a hapless West Ham, secure in their Premier League position and ready to head off for the summer a week before the season ended.

And that's Sheffield United's Bramall Lane ground - just one of three stadiums Liverpool have played at during the Premier years where they have never come away with the full three points.

But two goals from Philippe Countinho, plus further strikes from Daniel Sturridge and Divock Origi saw Liverpool to a convincing victory. You only have to look at the team-sheet and it had goals, creative players, it had everything really, and I felt we trusted that, we trusted our ability.

West Ham fans laugh & mock Sturridge, yet he's done more in one game since Jan, than Calleri has all season!

Sunday's crucial victory against the Hammers ensured Liverpool remain in the driving seat for a top four finish which could see them ensure a long-awaited return to the Champions League next season.

It was not the way the Hammers wanted to end what has been a turbulent first season as tenants of the former Olympic Stadium.

The Liverpool loss was not West Ham's only thumping home defeat this term, with the east London side conceding five goals against both Arsenal and Manchester City, four to Watford and City (again), and three to Southampton and Leicester.

"People may say West Ham didn't have much to play for and made a few changes", Lallana added, "but we were without players as well in Jordan Henderson, Sadio Mané, and Roberto Firmino, so we were missing big players, as we have all season".

"We tried our best and went out there to try and put on a performance".
