Kenny Thornton | 16 May, 2017, 11:01

Chinese President Xi Jinping on Monday urged world leaders to coordinate policies on development and reject protectionism within the framework of the Belt and Road initiative, his ambitious global investment plan.

"While the Belt and Road initiative focuses on the Asian and European continents, it does not exclude any target or party", he said.

"We should build an open platform of cooperation and uphold and grow an open world economy", Xi said in his opening address at a summit of world leaders in Beijing.

He said we should adopt a free trade policy to enhance business links with each other. "No matter if they are from Asia and Europe, or Africa or the Americas, they are all co-operative partners in building the Belt and Road".

He said peace and stability is imperative for the progress and prosperity of the world.

He called on all countries along the Belt and Road to invest more in the areas of education and health, and encourage young people to engage in their countries' development as well as the implementation of all activities along the Belt and Road. He said deep-seated problems in global development had yet to be addressed effectively, with worldwide trade and investment sluggish, and economic globalisation encountering headwinds.

Leaders from 29 countries attended the Belt and Road forum, as well as the heads of the United Nations, International Monetary Fund and World Bank. Some countries have expressed unease about the plan, seeing it as an attempt to expand Chinese influence.
