Britain's Labour to launch "radical, responsible" election manifesto

Kenny Thornton | 17 May, 2017, 11:01

Unveiling what leader Jeremy Corbyn called "a blueprint of what Britain could be", Labour said it was the only party that would make leaving the European Union "work for ordinary people" but would not support a second independence vote for Scotland.

Britain's Labour party leader Jeremy Corbyn speaks at the launch the Labour Party's General Election manifesto in Bradford, England, Tuesday, May 16, 2017.

Mr Corbyn pledged a "radical and responsible" offer to voters, also telling the event: "We will change our country while managing within our means".

Following the launch of its General Election manifesto setting out plans to take the utilities into public ownership, the party said the move would enable it to put money back into the pockets of consumers.

There would also be a new top rate of income tax of 50 per cent, the reports said.

However the Conservative offensive - backed by a new poster campaign - underlines their belief that Jeremy Corbyn's credibility on the economy remains a key Labour weakness.

Mr Corbyn said Labour was offering "hope" against the "fear" tactics of the Tories.

Labour hit back accusing the Conservatives of peddling "false claims" in order to divert attention from their own record on the economy.

TUC general secretary Frances O'Grady hailed the package as "an impressive set of pledges from the Labour Party", adding: "Their commitments to improve workers' rights and drive up wages would make a real difference to millions of workers". In its Funding Britain's Future publication, Labour said that the rate would be increased to 21% from 2018-19, 24% from 2019-20 and 26% from 2020-21.

A national investment bank and regional development banks would "finance growth and good jobs for all parts of the UK".

The party's election platform includes promises to increase the minimum wage to 10 pounds ($12.89) an hour by 2020 from the current 7.50 pounds, nationalize railways, energy companies and the postal service, scrap university tuition fees and pump billions more into the National Health Service. Administered by the Arts Council, the fund would distribute around £200m annually over five years, making it "among the biggest arts infrastructure projects ever, transforming the country's cultural landscape", the party says.
