Donald Trump 'asked Comey to shut down Flynn investigation'

Kenny Thornton | 17 May, 2017, 11:32

The White House issued a furious denial near the end of a tumultuous day spent beating back potentially disastrous news reports from dawn to dusk.

McCain says Trump needs to "get it all out. and the longer you delay, the longer it's going to last".

McCain, who chairs the Armed Services Committee, also calls it "unacceptable" for Trump to invite Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov into the Oval Office last week, calling him a "stooge".

The FBI was investigating Flynn, Trump and his associates over potential collusion with Russian Federation when Trump made the request.

The person says the goal of the memos was to keep a record of encounters Comey found odd or troubling.

He told Comey that Flynn hadn't done anything wrong. A source told CNN that Trump's request so appalled Comey, he felt compelled to document it.

HollywoodLifers, do you believe Trump actually asked Comey to stop investigating Flynn? He also published his letter to the FBI's acting director, Andrew McCabe, urging him to provide all of Comey's documents on meetings with the president within a week. His administration is already reeling from criticism of his firing of Comey a week ago and a report Monday that Trump revealed sensitive and highly classified intelligence to two Russian diplomats. John Cornyn, R-Texas, told reporters.

Comey was "concerned" that the President was trying to "stop the investigation", the source told CNN.

"If true, this is yet another disturbing allegation that the president may have engaged in some interference or obstruction of the investigation, " said Rep. Adam B. Schiff of California, the ranking Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee.

Comey prepared the account immediately after his meeting with the president, and sent copies of the memo to Federal Bureau of Investigation leadership and to some of his closest associates.

According to a memo, Comey wrote about the encounter and shared with confidantes, the President said: "I hope you can see your way clear to letting this go, to letting Flynn go".

But it wasn't completely lonely: A source close to the White House confirmed former Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski spent time at the White House Tuesday night.

Chaffetz says he will use the authority of a congressional subpoena if necessary.

A former federal law enforcement official told NBC that Comey wrote a memo about almost every interaction with the president.

Rep. Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, said in a tweet that he has his "subpoena pen ready". Those people kept details of the conversation between the president and Comey secret, so that it would not influence the ongoing probe, The Times reported.

Schumer said in a brief, somber floor speech Tuesday that he was "shaken" by the report that Trump asked Comey "to shut down an active investigation into a close political associate". The FBI has also probed other Trump associates for possible connections to Russian officials.

The person had seen the memo but was not authorized to discuss it by name and spoke on condition of anonymity.

The New York Times first reported news of the memo.

The FBI declined to comment Tuesday.

In December Flynn spoke with the Russian ambassador and later denied reports they had talked.

President Donald Trump asked FBI Director James Comey in February to drop an investigation into former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn, according to a person who was given a copy of a memo Comey wrote following his Oval Office conversation with Trump. The probe should clarify if President Trump and his top aides were involved in a conspiracy to obstruct justice, the lawmakers said. There are other memos about his meetings too.

After Comey was sacked, Trump tweeted a threat at the former director. "This is not a truthful or accurate portrayal of the conversation between the president and Mr. Comey", the official said in a statement.

"The president has never asked Mr. Comey or anyone else to end any investigation, including any investigation involving General Flynn", the official said. In those statements, White House officials had denied that Flynn had discussed easing US sanctions against Russia when he spoke to Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak in late December.
