Jason Chaffetz: Oversight panel will get Comey memo 'if it exists'

Kenny Thornton | 17 May, 2017, 11:13

Twice on Tuesday, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell downplayed the controversy, calling it "drama" from the White House. "We have to ask ourselves what is the right thing to do and then do it".

"There is nothing that stops them from charging Trump, but it is a legal question if he can stand trial and go through the criminal justice system while serving as President of the United States", the lawyer said. Trump disclosed classified information in that meeting.

When Trump fired Comey, he said he did so based on Comey's very public handling of the Hillary Clinton email probe and how it affected his leadership of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The person had seen the memo but was not authorized to discuss it by name and spoke on condition of anonymity.

A senior administration official denied that Trump pressed Comey to drop the Flynn probe. Vice President Mike Pence and Attorney General Jeff Sessions were also asked to leave the room.

The Republican chairman of the House oversight committee is requesting that the FBI turn over all documents and recordings that detail communications between former FBI Director James Comey and President Donald Trump.

"He's under total assault", said Rep. Steve Pearce (R-N.M.).

The White House has denied all reports about this Comey memo, but the truth shall soon be revealed, since Chaffetz has indicated, "I have my subpoena pen ready".

"The comments attributed to President Trump cross a risky line".

"OK, well, he's got to come in and tell us why", Graham said.

The Justice Department declined to comment. "Quit investigating, damn it'".

The Washington Post also confirmed the Times' report, saying that Comey "kept detailed notes of his multiple conversations with Trump", according to people close to the matter.

Well, I think that the obstruction of justice was the number one charge against Nixon that brought him down.

Donald Trump 'asked James Comey to shut down Flynn investigation'
I think he has been treated very, very unfairly by the media, as I call it, the fake media in many cases", Trump said in February. The newspaper said Comey was in the Oval Office that day with other national security officials for a terrorism threat briefing.

All 33 Democrats on the two committees made the call in a joint letter Tuesday that seeks an immediate public hearing with FBI Director James Comey. The letter was released just hours after it was disclosed that Comey wrote in a memo that Trump had asked him to shut down a federal investigation into former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn.

But Conaway is the newly installed leader of the investigation into Trump's alleged Russian ties, and one of his few comments was to promise a"bipartisan. thorough, meticulous" investigation".

For what it's worth, House Speaker Paul Ryan's spokesperson, AshLee strong, has communicated her boss' apparent agreement with Chaffetz on this issue: "We need to have all the facts, and it is appropriate for the House Oversight Committee to request this memo".

Comey, appointed director in 2013 by former President Barack Obama, replied to Trump's "good guy" remark by saying, "I agree he is a good guy", according to the paper. The Times noted that an associate of Comey read out parts of the document to a Times reporter.

NBC has not seen a copy of the memo. But the White House has provided differing accounts of the firing.

Trump fired Comey last week, with the White House initially claiming it was because of a memo from Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein that concluded Comey had mishandled the investigation into Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton's private email server.

As reporters huddled off the House floor questioning GOP lawmakers about the Comey memos, another staunch Trump loyalist, Rep. Louis Gohmert, R-Texas, walked by and entered the elevator as he quipped: "Almost sounds like fake news".

A second Comey associate told NPR that Comey wrote notes for his files after several conversations with Trump.

Trump fired Comey last week.

The White House says the report is "not a truthful or accurate portrayal of the conversation between the president and Mr. Comey".

The White House said the president has never asked Comey or anyone else to end any investigation.
