Medicaid expansion could survive under Senate's version of ACA repeal bill

Ben Pena | 17 May, 2017, 20:14

The House bill to repeal the health law could leave millions of Medicaid beneficiaries without health care coverage.

You've probably heard Democrats and talking heads on the news warning that those with any preexisting conditions will no longer be able to get health insurance. "I think they'll go down once this system comes into place". It will cause people to lose coverage, costs will continue to rise and people will suffer more and some will die. Mostly the "losers" of the act are lower-income people, older people, people with pre-existing health conditions, Planned Parenthood, hospitals and state governments. And what, truly, is the difference between being unable to afford coverage and being denied coverage?

That's just not true. Bill Cassidy of Louisiana and Susan Collins of ME have proposed allowing states to keep the Affordable Care Act if they want it. Others have discussed adding protections for those with pre-existing conditions. "Let me phrase this carefully".

It's not a quick sound bite.

"Without the pre-existing conditions [clause of the ACA]", Hodson said, "my insurance would be considerably more expensive". Throughout the 2015 session, we heard from Montanans across the state who faced serious health conditions but were unable to access coverage. Fortunately, Hodson said, his insurance as a state employee cuts those costs down to an affordable $6 per month.

The amendment, authored by Rep. Tom MacArthur, R-N.J., and Rep. Mark Meadows, R-N.C., would allow states to opt out of the Affordable Care Act's "community rating" provision that prevents insurers from basing premium rates on individuals' health status. Being on Medicaid counts as being insured.

At 10am the following morning, other members in the house discovered a shirtless Piazza breathing heavily with blood on his face. They were seen on camera trying to slap him awake, and at one point, two of the brothers landed on top of his unconscious body.

Meanwhile, a group of Democratic senators from states like West Virginia, Massachusetts and New Hampshire hit hard by the opioid epidemic said the proposed Medicaid cuts will make it more difficult for the addicted to get treatment.

But wait... we did something to help those with preexisting conditions who are also now uninsured. Pre-existing conditions include anything from cancer to asthma to pregnancy.

About 20 million individuals receive health insurance under Medicaid expansion in the 31 states and the District of Columbia that signed up for the program under the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare. And under the AHCA, pre-existing conditions can result in denial of coverage, significantly higher premiums or a coverage rider excluding coverage for that particular condition.

But wait... there is even more.

The average Pennsylvanian's insurance premium has increased by 53 percent this past year, on top of thousands of plans that have been cancelled.
