At present, the longest-range missiles in North Korea's arsenal, such as the one just tested, are intermediate-range ballistic missiles (IRBM) capable of striking the USA base at Guam.

However today Russian president Vladimir Putin said Moscow was opposed to any new countries acquiring nuclear weapons, but that the world should talk to North Korea rather than threaten it. The report also stated America's mainland and operations in the Pacific region are in North Korea's "sighting range for a strike and that it has all-powerful means for a retaliatory strike". It said that with this missile, "the USA mainland and Pacific operation region are in the [Democratic People's Republic of Korea's] sighting range for strike".

Last week, it demanded that the South hand over its spy chief.

North Korea's state media generally confirmed those estimates.

North Korea appears to be edging closer to developing a long-range nuclear missile capable of reaching the U.S. following a successful weapons test on 13 May which caused alarm across the world. Hawaii is roughly 7,000 km from North Korea.

Putin, speaking in Beijing, said nuclear tests of the type that Pyongyang had been carrying out in recent weeks were unacceptable, but that a peaceful solution to rising tensions on the Korean peninsula was needed.

Two senior national security advisers to Trump will meet Moon's top foreign policy adviser, Chung Eui-yong, in Seoul on Tuesday to discuss a summit of the leaders and the North's missile test, a source with direct knowledge of the meeting said.

The missile, called the Hwasong-12, launched at a steep angle from a site northwest of Pyongyang, reached an altitude of 1,242 miles and traveled about 435 miles, landing in the Sea of Japan.

"North Korea's latest successful missile test represents a level of performance never before seen from a North Korean missile", Schilling wrote.

"There is no question that North Korea continues to threaten the United States, our allies Japan, South Korea and its neighbors, including both China and Russian Federation", press secretary Sean Spicer said.

Last week, the new party announced "a list of 428 candidates for June's elections, half of whom were women", the broadcaster says. It's not clear why there was a delay of several hours before the announcement was made that Mr Philippe had been chosen.

That suggests a range of 4,500 kilometres (2,800 miles) or more if flown for maximum distance, analysts said.

The nature of the projectile is not immediately clear, a South Korean military official said by telephone.

On the 38 North website, aerospace engineering specialist John Schilling said it appeared to demonstrate a ballistic missile that could "reliably strike the U.S. base at Guam" in the Pacific.

North Korea says the missile can carry a heavy nuclear warhead.

"North Korea has been a flagrant menace for far too long", a statement released over the weekend said. The council has condemned all five of North Korea's launches this year.

While Trump has said he would be "honored" to talk with leader Kim Jong Un under favorable conditions, his administration Sunday seemed to throw cold water on the idea of talks with North Korea.

The nose cone resembles that of the KN-08 ICBM the North is believed to be developing. It quoted Kim as saying his country has "the most flawless weapon systems in the world", which he's ready to use to target the US if attacked.

"This may become half or a third of an ICBM", she said, pointing out that such missiles are built in two or three stages stacked atop each other.

Faso, R-Kinderhook, said the administration is appropriately applying diplomatic, economic and, to a lesser extent, military pressure on North Korea. "If the US awkwardly attempts to provoke the DPRK, it will not escape from the biggest disaster in ... history", KCNA quoted Kim as saying, referring to the North's formal name of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.
