North Korea Launches Missile That Doesn't Immediately Explode

Kenny Thornton | 17 May, 2017, 11:26

Tensions on the Korean Peninsula began to grow in early 2016 when North Korea conducted a nuclear test and after that launched a ballistic missile carrying a satellite. The missile flew 787 km and fell into the Sea of Japan, and its altitude reached 2,111 km.

Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin said the US needed to "stop scaring" the North Korean regime.

"It appears to have not only demonstrated an intermediate-range ballistic missile (IRBM) that might enable them to reliably strike the U.S. base at Guam, but more importantly, may represent a substantial advance to developing an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM)", Schilling wrote on his analysis site 38 North.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un made the threat after overseeing Sunday's test of a new intermediate-range ballistic missile, saying the "U.S. should not to disregard or misjudge the reality that its mainland and Pacific operation region are in the DPRK's sighting range for strike", according to Pyongyang's state media.

The missile would have flown about 4,500 kilometers at maximum trajectory, he wrote. Pyongyang claimed the test showed that it's capable of carrying a nuclear warhead.

The council adopted two sanctions resolutions a year ago to ramp up pressure on Pyongyang and deny leader Kim Jong-Un the hard currency needed to fund his military programs.

"There is a fundamental understanding North Korea's nuclear and missile provocations pose a great threat to the peace and stability of the global community", Lee said.

But he slammed the latest missile test as a "reckless provocation" after holding an emergency meeting with national security advisers.

China Foreign Affairs University global relations professor Su Hao said North Korea had "to be held accountable and pay the price" for violating United Nations resolutions. She declined comment on whether the North is capable of striking the continental U.S.

Mr Schilling said the ability to hit Guam, 3,400km away, was not a game-changer, but that the new missile could be a step along the way.

"Today I heard about the successful launch of the Hwasong-12, and I think that we call our nuclear capability a treasured sword, and it's our army-first policy that makes us strong and that guarantees that our people can be happy".

"If the USA dares opt for a military provocation against the DPRK, we are ready to counter it", it said.
