Nine people were injured and taken to a hospital, the District of Columbia's fire and emergency medical services said on Twitter.

A Turkish expert in global relations told Asharq Al-Awsat that "cold relations" between Ankara and the USA might persist, especially after the Pentagon announced that it would arm Kurdish militias in Syria, as a main partner in fighting ISIS.

Trump highlighted his support for Turkey in the fight against terror and terror groups, including ISIS and the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) - considered a terrorist group by the U.S., Turkey and Europe.

Turkey, a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation member, is a vital ally in the fight against ISIS, allowing the United States to use its Incirlik air base in the fight against the terror group.

Such groups will "have no safe quarter", Trump said. "We also appreciate Turkey's leadership in seeking an end to the horrific killing in Syria".

The administration of Trump's predecessor, Barack Obama, had criticized Erdogan's crackdown on the Turkish press and academia after the failed coup in July 2016.

Trump has gone out of his way to foster a good relationship with Erdogan.
