The man who drove a auto into a crowd in Times Square on Thursday was in custody, in which one was killed and 22 others injured, New York's mayor said.

Alyssa Elsman, the 18-year-old woman who died at the scene, was a tourist from MI, according to the NYPD. The vehicle appeared to catch fire, as smoke was seen coming up from it. Witnesses said the driver appeared to intentionally drive into a group of people, but police are still investigating the motive. Here's video showing police walking Rojas from the police precinct: City officials said Rojas has two prior driving-while-intoxicated arrests and other motor vehicle violations on his record.

In previous arrests, he told authorities he believed he was being harassed and followed, according to a law enforcement official who wasn't authorized to speak publicly on an ongoing probe and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.

One young woman was killed and 22 people injured after a vehicle plowed into pedestrians in Times Square on Thursday, officials said.

In a phone interview, Wood said he was in the usual lunchtime crowd in Times Square when the man began driving down the sidewalk nearby. She turned and saw people running away.

A law enforcement official says a vehicle that plowed into a crowd of pedestrians in Times Square killed one person and injured about 20 others.

The alleged driver, Rojas, 26, from the Bronx, was taken into custody.

Police say they do not now believe the crash was in any way linked to terrorism. He turned around and saw the auto hitting people on the sidewalk.

Trump denies Comey allegations, collusion with Russian Federation
Next question ", he said, speaking at a press conference with the Colombian president. "Believe me, there's no collusion". He said that he thinks the appointment of a special counsel "divides the country".

"Preliminarily it looks more like a vehicle accident than anything else", a NY police spokesman told AFP.

"I was just doing something that I hope people would do, because I was trying to do the right thing", he said.

"I did not knock him out", he said.

A picture of the suspect on the TMZ website appears to show him in a rage in the moments after the auto is stopped.

Portage Central Principal Eric Alburtus tells the Detroit Free Press that Elsman was a "kind, compassionate student known around the school for selling delicious muffins she baked in a cooking class". President Donald Trump, whose home at Trump Tower is one mile from the crash scene, was made aware of the incident nearly immediately and given updates, White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer tweeted.

Rojas was also charged with drunken driving in 2008 and 2015, according to New York City police. "It really isn't", he said of the Times Square crowd.

The incident occurred around lunchtime at the crowded Times Square in the heart of Manhattan which is among the most popular tourist destinations in the world.
