The statue was the third out of four Confederate statues that was slated for removal in the city. Pro-monument groups were separated from monument protestors with metal barricades - similar to the setup at Jefferson Davis - and with occasional yelling matches between the groups. The Beauregard statue occupied a traffic circle near the entrance to City Park, a space that also is home to an oak tree that is reportedly 800 years old and has a colorful local history, which includes balls, fairs and duels.

The street cars are still not running on St. Charles near Lee Circle.

Similar to the first two removals, the process with the Beauregard statue began late at night and went into the early morning, ending at about 3 a.m. Workers covered their faces, though they did not wear bulletproof vests, which was a precautionary measure taken during the first two due to death threats to the contractor. The New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) are present to ensure public safety. The removal is expected to be completed today. But the event remained peaceful.

At one point a woman came to the monument and laid flowers at the base of the monument. The Times Picayune reported a single scuffle, but no arrests. Details on any route changes are available at www.norta.com.

After the unveiling, a crowd of Confederate veterans circled the statue two or three times as strains of "America" and "Dixie" filled the air.

The Beauregard statue was the third Confederate-era memorial the city has removed.

The effort to remove the New Orleans monuments is part of larger controversy surrounding Confederate symbols in cities nationwide.

The City Council voted 6-1 in 2015 to remove the monuments after several contentious public meetings were marred by heckling and debate. They will be crated and stored during this process.

Others felt the city has bigger problems that Mayor Mitch Landrieu is ignoring.

CSA is acronym for Confederate States of America. A path that leads to the Robert E. Lee monument has been cleared. He fought for civil rights.

Monument supporters, said the works are a way to remember and honor history. Dylann Roof, an avowed white supremacist, shot and killed nine black parishioners at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church. It was commissioned by the Jefferson Davis Memorial Association. One more statue remains to be taken down, of Gen. Robert E. Lee.

The monument, like other statues of Southern Civil War leaders, has come under increasing fire in recent years from protesters.
