Cyber attack: NHS Tayside returns to normal

Kayla Schwartz | 19 May, 2017, 06:39

Capitalizing on spying tools believed to have been developed by the U.S. National Security Agency, the "ransomware" attack launched on Friday has infected tens of thousands of computers in 104 countries, putting the financial industry on high alert.

While the NSA has not commented on either the WannaCry attack or Microsoft's response, Tom Bossert, President Trump's Homeland Security advisor discussed at Monday's daily White House press briefing that the infection rate has been relatively low in the USA compared to overseas infection rates, and that no federal systems have been compromised.

The NHS, which was showcased in the opening ceremony of the 2012 Olympic Games, employs more than 1.5 million people, making it the world's fifth biggest employer after the USA and Chinese militaries, Walmart and McDonald's.

"All GP practices affected will be returned to normal operational status by today". He said: "We had no computers and no access to any records".

The NHS cyber-attack should be treated as a wake-up call for organisations around the world, particularly, the health sector.

"We'd also like to thank our patients and the public for bearing with us whilst we got our systems up and running again".

"Now this cyber attack has happened it means there needs to nationwide look into the systems the NHS is using and funds put in to make sure it is all updated".

A United Kingdom -based security researcher who goes by the name MalwareTech put a stop to the spread of WannaCry on Friday by registering a domain name he discovered in the ransomware's code.

Foreign minister Julie Bishop on Sunday also confirmed there was one business under investigation of a possible cyber attack.

Delays on Metro-North New Haven line due to minor derailment
Commuters were quick to blame the MTA, which owns the New Haven Line's tracks in NY , for failing to maintain rails. Metro North officials tweeted that riders should expect a delay of up to 25 minutes.

The ransomware attack first spread through a massive email phishing campaign with first reports of infected systems appearing on Friday last week.

While some practices were not directly attacked by the cyber-attack, some network connections to data servers and the Internet were affected.

Suffering ongoing disruption, GP appointments have been cancelled across the NHS as it recovers from the global outbreak, seeing the number of doctors diverting patients from A&E to drop dramatically.

Health trusts across England were sent details of an IT security patch that would have protected them from the crippling ransomware attack, NHS Digital has said.

Users who do not patch their systems and the Shadow Brokers were more directly responsible for the attack than NSA, they said.

A spokesman said: "Our understanding is that if that had been acted on it would have prevented [the malware attack]".

The malware attack, which began on Friday and has been linked by some researchers to previous hits by a North Korean-run hacking operation, leveraged a tool built by the NSA that leaked online in April, Microsoft says.

Professor Clark said more information on protecting your computer was available via the IT security company Sophos and the National Cyber Security Centre, among other sources.
