Donald Trump told Michael Flynn to "stay strong" amid growing scandal

A majority of Americans believe that President Trump fired FBI Director James Comey to hinder the investigation into possible ties between Trump's campaign and Russian Federation, according to a poll released Thursday.

"No. No. next question", Trump said when asked during a joint news conference with Colombian president Juan Manuel Santos if he had, in any way, tried to influence the probe.

On Wednesday, a special counsel was appointed by the Department of Justice to oversee the investigation.

"Did you at any time urge former FBI Director James Comey, in any way shape or form, to close or back down the investigation into Michael Flynn?".

Absent from Trump's reasoning was the FBI's investigation of his campaign's contacts with Russian Federation - something Trump told NBC was on his mind when he made the decision - as a new, more independent Russian Federation investigation gets underway.

"All over the world, no matter where you go, the Federal Bureau of Investigation is special", Mr Trump said.

In the memo, which ABC News has not seen, Comey wrote that he was asked by the president to let the Flynn probe go in February. "Believe me. My total priority is the United States of America", Trump said.

"I don't think I'm in a position to give any advice to President Trump".

'The FBI has not had that special reputation with what happened in the campaign, what happened with respect to the Clinton campaign, and even you could say, directly or indirectly, with respect to the the much more successful Trump campaign.

Reporters pressed the Colombian president to comment on Trump's "America First" policy and the proposed southern border wall, but Santos sidestepped controversy by praising cooperation with the USA in ending the decades-long conflict in his country.

Trump himself frequently brought up Abedin on the campaign trail, and his supporters cheered "lock her up" in reference to Clinton at his rallies.

Flynn is reported to have told friends at a northern Virginia restaurant on April 25 that Trump sent him a message telling him to "stay strong", according to a report by Yahoo News on Thursday. "He is a good guy". Santos is expected to ask Mr. Trump, who is making cuts to foreign aid, to renew funding to support a peace agreement between the Colombian government and the Revolutionary Armed Forces.
