Ex-FBI Director Heads Trump-Russia Inquiry

Francis Olson | 19 May, 2017, 23:49

Appointing an independent special counsel to oversee the federal investigation into allegations that Russian Federation interfered in the 2016 presidential election was the only way to quiet the escalating chaos within the Trump White House.

Shortly after Mueller was assigned to lead the Russian Federation probe on Wednesday, the president said it would prove that his campaign did not collude with any foreign entity, adding that he looked forward to this matter concluding quickly.

Former FBI director Robert Mueller has been selected to lead the inquiry.

His latest tweets came hours before he was to hold a joint press conference with the visiting Colombian president.

"No politician in history, and I say this with great surety, has been treated worse or more unfairly", Trump said in a commencement address at the United States Coast Guard Academy on Wednesday.

Trump's push back contrasted sharply with the near universal welcome in Washington for Mueller, the former Federal Bureau of Investigation director picked for the special counsel post Wednesday by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein. Stocks and the dollar tanked, amid the whirlwind of Washington turmoil, as Wall Street rightfully anxious that Trump won't be able to pass his economic growth agenda of tax reform and deregulation - because Congress is busy chasing down the latest on the alleged Russian Federation conspiracy.

"As it became clear how little he was willing to talk about it, it also became clear how broad this investigation that Mueller is about to undertake actually is", Murphy said.

The president answered that he believed it was harmful. The below-ground facilities in the Capitol Visitors Center - one on the House side, one on the Senate side - are primarily used by national security committees to receive updates on classified or sensitive matters from top government officials, who regularly visit the Capitol to meet with lawmakers.

Prior to Corker's comments this afternoon, Mackler issued another statement in which he called Rosenstein's "appointing a special important first step in pursuing an independent investigation into the extent of Russia's influence".

The focus now turns to how Mueller will pick up the FBI's investigation of the Trump campaign and Russian Federation, and what it means for the White House.

"As I have stated many times, a thorough investigation will confirm what we already know - there was no collusion between my campaign and any foreign entity", he said.

On Thursday, Rosenstein informed the Senate in a closed-door session about Trump's controversial decision to dump Comey.

The circumstances are not just unusual, they are unprecedented.

"We need to rally around our president right now". Maybe so, but Mr. Mueller's appointment, which provides the Democrats and anti-Trump media the independent special counsel they have demanded, will give the Trump administration at least some breathing room to return to its policy agenda.

I agree. Mueller's sterling reputation - a reputation similar to James Comey at one time - does not change the analysis.

The deputy attorney general is likely to be asked whether the administration will comply with bipartisan requests to turn over information to congressional panels conducting their own investigations. He understands pressure-cooker politics and knows how to navigate the corridors of power.

Now Mueller will have almost unfettered access to witnesses and information, and the ability to bring criminal charges. He said that the FBI's work would continue smoothly with most of the same investigatory team still in place. No doubt, Mr. Mueller will explore all avenues in gathering and analyzing facts that could possibly make out a credible case of obstruction of justice against the president and/or any of his aides.
