Experts fight back against ransomware as countries brace for more cyber attacks

Kenny Thornton | 19 May, 2017, 18:22

The cyber attack that crippled NHS computer systems is the biggest of its kind ever launched, security chiefs have said.

Russian Federation and Britain were among the worst hit countries.

The ransomware program demanded a payment worth £230 to unlock the affected computers.

The organisation told trusts: "Our Data Security Centre continues to work around the clock alongside the National Cyber Security Centre, to support NHS organisations that have reported any issues related to this cyber-attack".

The attack was first detected on Friday.

The move followed the ransomware attack on NHS computer systems.

Cancer treatments have had to be delayed and staff have been working overtime to clear a backlog at Plymouth's Derriford Hospital, bosses have revealed, as a result of the cyber attacks on Friday.

"Most people are not paying this, so there are not a lot of money being made with this by criminal organisations so far", he said.

"If you have a hospital appointment you should still attend unless you are contacted and told not to".

Nevertheless, the attack hit 48 NHS Trusts, and a number are still affected, including London's Barts Health NHS Trust, which runs The Royal London Hospital, Newham Hospital, Whipps Cross Hospital, Mile End Hospital and St Bartholomew's Hospital.

Accident and emergency units in England were almost back to normal yesterday, the National Health Service (NHS) said, after the last restrictions put in place following the global cyber attack were lifted.

There is still no evidence any of our hospital systems were affected and we are completely confident no patient data was involved.

A "range" of Windows operation systems are used by the NHS in Scotland and Ms Sturgeon said there is regular investment in cyber security.

Patients have been asked to continue attending Accident and Emergency only if their condition is live threatening.

The NHS has warned the appointments at hospitals and GP may be slower than normal while the disruption caused by the ransomware attack subsides.
