Foreign trip comes at crucial time, but Trump is a reluctant traveler

Freda Brock | 19 May, 2017, 20:47

On issues big and small, Trump has repeatedly flipped back and forth between isolationism and interventionism, and world leaders are eager to find out which perspective will emerge on a trip that is already being viewed with trepidation by foreign policy experts. These are not the best of circumstances.

There's precedent for this: In 2016 when President Obama traveled overseas, he was asked repeatedly - nearly exclusively it seemed - about the presidential campaign and then-candidate Donald Trump.

Where does the president stand on the Middle East peace process? They now see a golden opportunity to rebuild ties with their most important ally.

Abdallah bin Saleh bin Jum'ah, Saudi chairman of the board of directors of the council, described the visit as "historic" and one that reflects the political and economic weight of the Kingdom internationally.

The agreement, between the USA under former president Barack Obama, five other world powers, and Tehran, was viewed with suspicion by Riyadh.

He also said that Saudi Arabia has no problem or hesitation in doing so, and it will continue to happen in the near future as well.

Saudi leaders seek to convince President Donald Trump that his priorities are theirs, too, and that they are indispensable partners in fighting terrorism, in confronting Iran, in bolstering US businesses and perhaps in pursuing peace between Israelis and Palestinians. This has been revealed by the foreign minister of Saudi Arabia, Adel al-Jubeir.

Trump's trip was always going to be dramatic.

The first stop is Saudi Arabia, followed by Israel and then to Europe, including to Brussels for a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit. He says it's hard to overstate the importance of chemistry - or the lack of it - between a USA president and a Saudi king.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — American country singer Toby Keith, known for songs such as "Whiskey Girl" and "Beer For My Horses", is scheduled to perform in the Saudi capital, Riyadh, this weekend in an event that coincides with President Donald Trump's first overseas visit.

Tomorrow, as you know, I'm going to Saudi Arabia.

Trump generated controversy as a presidential candidate with his call that Muslims be banned temporarily from entering the United States.

KEITH: Well, President Trump had previously said that he thought North Atlantic Treaty Organisation was obsolete.

Allegations that the President handed Israeli intelligence to Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov during a meeting last week may also come up.
