Recovering alcoholic Harris promised him £200,000 (€233,000) for the job, but in November a year ago Zed reported him to City of London Police instead.
A former producer of TV drama The Bill has been found guilty of trying to hire hitmen to kill his partner of more than 30 years so he could inherit her estate and run off with his younger lover.
Prosecutors say David Harris offered three men large sums of money to kill his partner, Hazel Allinson, a former scriptwriter.
David Harris, 68, allegedly offered around £200,000 to get rid of Hazel Allinson in a fake mugging or auto jacking before his arrest in November previous year. Both worked on long-running TV police series "The Bill".
Harris told the court he had an "active libido" and it was on a regular visit to a brothel in Worthing where he met Ms Cekaviciute.
The first man that Harris asked declined to carry out the hit and the second went to police after Harris offered him 200,000 pounds ($260,000) to do the job.
The potential hitman "Chris" was an undercover officer who taped his meeting with Harris in a Sainsbury's auto park as the pensioner told him: "Whatever happens, it's got to be fatal".
The 68-year-old wanted to escape with Ugne Cekaviciute, a Lithuanian sex worker and former professional basketball player, who had been studying in London.
But Harris claimed that he was merely researching a spy novel and denied a charge of solicitation to murder, a claim rejected by jurors at the Old Bailey. She even offered evidence in support of his defence while in the witness box.
The court heard he sneaked Ms Cekaviciute into the house they shared in Amberley, West Sussex. and photographed her posing on a bed.
Referring to the 68 year old from Amberley, Judge Anne Molyneux QC said: "There was a prolonged period of nearly a year where he actively sought to murder his life partner".
Sentencing has been adjourned until 14 July for a report on Harris's future risk.
