GENERAL ELECTION: More schools cash but no triple lock in Tory manifesto

Kayla Schwartz | 19 May, 2017, 19:25

The Conservatives would "aim" to meet their manifesto pledge to reduce net migration to the tens of thousands, a cabinet minister has said.

"We know the devastating reality of seven years of Tory Government - working families hammered by cuts to tax credits, low income families forced to rely on foodbanks, and disgraceful Tory policies like the bedroom tax, the rape clause, and the cuts to disabled mobility support".

"It is.a portrait of the kind of country I want (Britain).to be after Brexit as we chart our own way in the world", May said in the northern English town of Halifax, an area which voted to leave the European Union and where the opposition Labour Party have a majority of just 428 votes.

Theresa May, Britain's prime minister, has launched the ruling Conservative Party's manifesto before the general election next month.

"It's our ambition to get it down", he said, adding: "It's our aim to continue to bear down on immigration".

"So we will double the Immigration Skills Charge levied on companies employing migrant workers, to £2,000 a year by the end of the parliament, using the revenue generated to invest in higher level skills training for workers in the United Kingdom".

He said there would be a cost to the economy, but this had not yet been calculated "because we do not know specifically what year we are going to reach that point" of hitting the target.

Where Thatcher championed the individual, Mrs May's manifesto says "we all have a debt to others".

She has promised fundamental - though yet to be detailed - reforms to fix problems ranging from arrogant elites and venal bosses to workers' rights, immigration and Britain's obsession with class privilege.

The changes are part of a big overhaul of elderly care.

People will be able to defer paying for their care until after their death. If you are in a care home or nursing home, the value of your house can be considered.

That means that however much is spent on social care, it becomes free once someone is down to their last £100,000.

Theresa May said it was the first time a government had produced a proper long-term plan for the sustainability of social care in England.

To help pay for social care, Theresa May also intends to scrap winter fuel payments for better-off pensioners by introducing means-testing to ensure only the poorest pensioners receive the payments.

Another measure announced in the manifesto, scrapping a planned £72,000 cap on social care bills, was denounced by the author of a seminal report on the issue, Sir Andrew Dilnot, who said pensioners would be left "helpless" to control costs.
