Google Android OS Installed On 2 Billion Active Devices

Kayla Schwartz | 19 May, 2017, 17:11

While not all of the feature of Play Protect are new, the latest launch sees Google making the protective features more visible to Android users. Here are some highlights from the conference.

GOOGLE HAS SHOWN OFF its upcoming Android O operating system, which is now available to download in beta. It demoed Android O's picture-in-picture mode, which made its debut in the dev preview back in March, along Smart Text Selection, Autofill in apps and Notification Dots - which are exactly like the irritating app badges found on iOS. It's basically a light version of the full-fledged OS, but optimized for phones running on less than 1GB of RAM complete with less demanding iterations of apps like YouTube Go and Chrome. The app comes with a Home Screen widget that acts as a shortcut for the Google Assistant.

During the keynote address at Google I/O, CEO Sundar Pichai demonstrated how the new feature could be used to identify nearly anything. For example, if it sees you've got an trip coming up in your calendar and the traffic is looking heavy, its circle will start glowing - say "Hey Google, what's up?" and it'll tell you to leave early, along with a suggested route. Previously, the assistant worked only on Google's Android software.

So, without further ado, these are the most important things Google announced previous year. All a person will have to do is strap it on and explore a virtual landscape using a new positional tracking technology called WorldSense. This is similar to Apple's facial recognition feature in Photos for Mac and iPhones.

One potentially unsettling new feature in Photos will let you automatically share some or all of your photos with other people.

Using smartphone cameras, Google Lens recognizes what a user is pointing their device at, and provides input based on machine learning and variables such as location. It can also recognize things like flower species and other objects. Google had introduced rounded icons for the Pixel users in the past. It was announced during the Google I/O 2017 this year. Devices with Android Go will have data management and savings in quick settings, and teaming up with carriers will let you keep track of how much data you've been consuming with the ability to top up. Google will be partnering with established job sites like Monster and CareerBuilder for the platform. It is now formally trying to compete with Linkedin and other independent job portals.
