In what appeared to be an abrupt decision, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein chose Mueller to investigate alleged Russian interference in US elections past year as well as "any links and/or coordination between the Russian government and individuals associated with the campaign of President Donald Trump".

As the president is wont to do, his first tweet, with the misspelled version of 'counsel, ' came after Fox & Friends was detailing scandals of the Obama administration.

Thomas J. Pickard, who served as deputy director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation under Mueller, told The Washington Post, that the Federal Bureau of Investigation veteran "doesn't sway under political pressure", which is why it is being suggested that Trump's embattled presidency could become even more precarious, given the numerous scandals involving him and some of his aides and Russian Federation.

The U.S. president tweeted Thursday morning branding the probe into possibly Russian collusion with his campaign the "single greatest witch hunt" in political history.

Mueller's appointment could signal a turning point in the investigation into Russia's role in the presidential election and raises the stakes for President Trump.

In contrast with Trump's remarks, Mueller's appointment has received widely bipartisan welcome across Congress since Wednesday evening when the news went public. Demands intensified from Democrats on Capitol Hill for the Justice Department to appoint a special counsel or prosecutor to oversee the case.

As special counsel, Mueller is "authorized to prosecute federal crimes arising from the investigation of these matters", according to the Justice Department order Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein signed.

In a brief statement he said: "I accept this responsibility and will discharge it to the best of my ability". And President Richard Nixon resigned after a damning investigation by a select committee, before he could be impeached.

Reuters reported on Thursday that Flynn and other Trump campaign advisers were in contact with Russian officials and others with Kremlin ties in at least 18 calls and emails during the last seven months of the presidential race.

"No, No. Next question", Trump told reporters.

Mueller's appointment has come as Trump fends off reports he shared United States secrets with Russian officials in the Oval Office, and had asked Comey to drop his investigation into former Trump national security advisor Michael Flynn.

House Speaker Paul Ryan said the appointment was consistent with his goal of ensuring that "thorough and independent investigations are allowed to follow the facts wherever they may lead". "Congress clearly needs to investigate, and we need to hear from Comey now".

Mr Mueller has been appointed a special counsel to examine Moscow's alleged efforts to influence last year's USA election. The others were former Connecticut Sen.

Shortly thereafter Burr reversed himself in a statement saying Flynn's attorneys "have not yet indicated their intentions regarding the Senate Intelligence Committee's subpoena", and he would welcome "their willingness to cooperate".

Trump is preparing to leave town Friday on his first foreign trip, and aides have been hopeful the journey will be a chance for the administration to get back on track after weeks of chaos and distractions.
