Nanaimo RCMP say they've found the body of missing Nanaimo teen Makayla Chan and believe she was murdered.

Mounties are treating this as a homicide and say their Serious Crime Unit is involved in leading the investigation.

Douglas said in a brief phone interview she had no further information about where or when Chang's body was found.

A few weeks after Chang's disappearance, a tactical team searched two Nanaimo properties in relation to the case.

"I fell to the floor and just started crying". "We were still keeping that positive hope and today it was crushed".

The 16-year-old was last seen on March 22, and police have been conducting an extensive search for her since then.

She went missing in Nanaimo on March 20.

Police said Chang's family "is asking for privacy during this hard time".

The teenager, who was cared for by her grandmother since she was three-years-old, had been staying with 57-year-old Steven Bacon at a South Nanaimo home off and on for two months, despite protests from her grandmother.

Police are now investigating Chang's apparent death as a homicide; they do not believe the public is at risk.

The Nanaimo School District said it will provide counselling for both staff and students across the district if they need it.
