House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Ed Royce, a California Republican, called on Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson "to hold individuals accountable" for the attack.

The visit was also marred by a violent coda - an attack on protesters outside the Turkish ambassador's residence in Washington on Tuesday that US officials said was carried out by Erdogan's presidential guards. USA lawmakers demanded stronger action.

Meanwhile, US senator John McCain, has called for Turkey's ambassador to the US to be removed from the country following a brawl outside his Washington DC residence earlier this week.

The calls came as the Trump administration acknowledged it had released two members of Erdogan's detail after holding them briefly after the incident, which took place outside the Turkish ambassador's residence in the USA capital on Tuesday.

Now while Chief Newsham vows to pursue the culprits involved, it is likely that some of them were en route back to Turkey that evening.

"You can not touch us", he tells the officer, seemingly citing diplomatic immunity granted to registered diplomatic agents. A US official said Thursday that wasn't the case.

A video emerged Thursday of Erdogan watching members of his security detail violently clash with protesters in D.C.

The guards' release left the US struggling to point to anything that amounts to accountability.

"The violent response of your security detail to peaceful protestors is wholly unacceptable and, unfortunately, reflective of your government's treatment of the press, ethnic minority groups and political opponents", the senators wrote.

Utah's Chaffetz expected to leave office by end of June
This came after The New York Times reported that Comey wrote memos detailing his interactions with the president. In February, he met a packed townhall in his Utah district, filled with constituents chanting, "do your job".

"Today, we face a new enemy in the fight against terrorism, and again we seek to face this threat together", Trump said, adding that it was a "great honor" to host Erdogan at the White House.

Tuesday's fight outside the embassy injured 11 people, at least one critically. Another person wrenches a woman's neck and throws her to the ground. In all, nine people were hurt.

McCain said "this kind of thing can not go un-responded to diplomatically".

In video of that scene, recorded by Voice of America Turkish news service, Erdogan's bodyguard stands up from the Mercedes and appears to relay a message to another man who was positioned closer to the street level action. He then "exited the vehicle and looked directly toward the melee feet away".

For their part, the Turkish Embassy blamed the violence on the protesters, the AP reported.

Nauert said in her statement that the United States respects Turkey's concerns about its approach, and will continue regular consultations on the issue.

But it didn't happen in Turkey, where Erdogan's increasingly authoritarian government shows little patience with dissent.

Last week, the Trump administration announced that it would arm the YPG - as a delegation of high-level Turkish military and intelligence officials were visiting Washington in advance of Erdogan's meeting with Trump. Washington sees the militia as best suited for an eventual siege of Raqqa, the Syrian stronghold of Islamic State (formerly ISIS/ISIL).

This is not the first time that Erdogan's entourage has been embroiled in a physical fight with protesters on US soil.
