New Orleans Uproots Third Confederate Statue In Early Morning Operation

Francis Olson | 19 May, 2017, 17:15

In 2015, the words "Black Lives Matter" were spray-painted on both sides of the monument's column, CNN affiliate WDAM-TV reported.

Workers in New Orleans took down a Confederate monument to Gen. P.G.T. Beauregard early Wednesday as onlookers watched from lawn chairs, defiant statue supporters waved Confederate battle flags and opponents celebrated.

Tuesday evening, the City of New Orleans released an official statement concerning the removal of the remaining two Confederate monuments. The most famous monument left-wing groups are targeting is the President Andrew Jackson monument which sits at the center for the city's French Quarter.

The Beauregard monument was unveiled to a 17-gun salute the afternoon of November 11, 1915, by Hilda Beauregard, a granddaughter of the Confederate general, according to a report in The Times-Picayune the next morning.

"That's awful. Any of us from the south, it's a part of our heritage and it should be where it could be seen", said museum tourist Pat Cook. Among people in the crowd: musicians Terrence Blanchard and Nicholas Payton, as well as Angela Kinlaw, Michael "Quess" Moore and Malcolm Suber with Take 'Em Down NOLA.

Monument supporters, said the works are a way to remember and honor history. Only nonprofits and governmental entities will be allowed to take part in the process, and the city said the process will include the Battle of Liberty Place monument as well as the statues of Davis and Lee. The city has not given a time frame for Lee's removal due to "intimidation, threats, and violence, serious safety concerns remain". Civil District Court Judge Kern Reese denied the request later that day, and on May 10 he declined to grant Marksbury's request for a preliminary injunction.

How does Hillyer feel about the other confederate statues?

It was the third of four such monuments to be taken down under a proposal by Mayor Mitch Landrieu that was approved by the City Council more than a year ago.

The last of four Confederate monuments in New Orleans, Louisiana could soon come down. "As we near our City's 300th anniversary, we must continue to find courage to stand up to hate and embrace justice and compassion". Crews could be seen taking down the cables that guide the streetcars.

At one point three people, a man and two women, were escorted away from the area in handcuffs. A woman was also arrested shortly after the statue was lifted up when she came ashore from a kayak in Bayou St. John near the monument.

In Orlando, Florida, Mayor Buddy Dyer said he plans to move the marble statue known as "Johnny Reb" from a park to a cemetery.
