New Ransom Email Cyber Attack Fears At Start Of Working Week

Laurie Berry | 19 May, 2017, 14:44

The "Wannacry" computer virus attack over the weekend was reportedly disseminated with the aid of software developed by the US National Security Agency (NSA).

Colleges: Internet security firm Qihoo360 issued a "red alert" over the weekend, saying a large number of colleges and students in China had been hit by the ransomware attack. Brad Smith criticized USA intelligence agencies, including the CIA and National Security Agency, for "stockpiling" software code that can be used by hackers.

A malware called Wanna Decryptor was used in the attack, which encrypts files on a user's computer, blocking them from view.

South Korea has been mostly spared from the global cyber chaos that crippled scores of governments and companies in 150 countries.

Officials say they're aware of those problems. The party's home affairs spokesman Brian Paddick said: "We need to get to the bottom of why the government thought cyber-attacks were not a risk, when a combination of warnings and plain common sense should have told ministers that there is a growing and risky threat to our cyber-security".

Friday, we saw the NHS was being held to ransom, as hospitals were paralysed by Friday evening as operations were cancelled and GP surgeries were locked out their computer systems also.

"We are implementing remediation steps as quickly as possible".

They should immediately update their Windows operating system and back up their data. The city of Osaka said its home page went blank, although problems had not been detected otherwise. It was benign because it contained a flaw that prevented it from taking over computers and demanding ransom to unlock files but other more malicious ones will likely pop up. "We are lucky that this logic bug is still present", Suiche said. Robinson said he calculated the total based on payments tracked to bitcoin addresses specified in the ransom demands.

In April, CNBC reported that Apple had hired a team of biomedical engineers to work at a separate office in Palo Alto, Calif. However, the Apple Watch seems like the most likely candidate at this stage.

He also said the NHS may have "got away with it" to some extent, as its "obsolete" computer systems could easily have been subjected to a targeted attack seeking to extract patients' personal data. FedEx said it was "experiencing interference", the Associated Press reported. "We will continue to work with affected (organizations) to confirm this", the agency said.

Companies worldwide are bracing for even more fallout from the biggest cyberattack ever as their workers head back to the office Monday. Just remember that if the cyber criminals come up with something new, it could take a little while for your vendor to add it to their anti-virus definitions.

In other cases, organizations might be stuck with certain systems that run unsupported Windows versions without having the financial resources to upgrade or replace them.

The cyber-attack that spread rapidly around the globe was stifled when a security researcher disabled a key mechanism used by the worm to spread, but experts said the hackers were likely to return.

"Ransomware is traditionally their topic", he said. The ease of stopping the attack suggests the hackers were new to this game.
