NSA 'considered telling Microsoft about hacking codes'

5 ways to become less likely target for ransomware hackers Ransomware attack: K'taka banks, ATMs stay insulated

What was going on?

As the global ransomware attack continues, the Uttar Pradesh police, on May 16, issued a set of measures asking organisations to comply with them in order to protect themselves from the ongoing cyber attack.

The exploit, known as "EternalBlue" or "MS17-010", took advantage of a vulnerability in the Microsoft software that reportedly had been discovered and developed by the U.S. National Security Agency, which used it for surveillance activities. For users running pirated Windows, getting infected with WannaCry is just one of the risks they agree with when not getting a genuine license.

The original WannaCry ransomware may have been shut down but the cyberattack pandemic is far from over. A former cybersecurity researcher with the Israeli Air Force's famous OFEK Unit, he is founder and CEO of Javelin Networks, a security company that uses artificial intelligence to fight against malware.

What is WannaCry Ransomware?

It can quickly spread through an entire network of computers in a business or hospital, encrypting files on every PC.

Security entrepreneur Ken Munro from Pen Test Partners says so-called smart home devices are likely the next frontier for malware.

Microsoft president and legal officer Brad Smith blamed the NSA's practice of developing hacking methods to use against the USA government's own enemies. "We know the NSA treasure trove is in bad guy's hands, why wouldn't they use it?" The problem is that not all customers installed the patch. Ensuring that your Windows operating system is up to date with the most recent security and software updates, which patch any holes and vulnerabilities in the software, makes it much more hard for a hacker to infiltrate your system and networks.

Trump says he's 'very close' to naming a new Federal Bureau of Investigation director
Trump confirmed when he was asked if Lieberman, the Democrat-turned-independent senator from CT was a top candidate, CNN reported. Lieberman added that McFarland "and General Mike Flynn will form a very strong leadership team at the National Security Council".

The company had already been supporting it longer than it normally would have because so many customers still used it and the effort was proving costly. The attacks highlight the challenges that organizations face with consistently applying security safeguards on a large scale.

To exploit the vulnerability, in most situations, an unauthenticated attacker could send a specially crafted packet to a targeted SMBv1 server.

In 2014, Microsoft ended support for the highly popular Windows XP, released in 2001 and engineered beginning in the late 1990s, arguing that the software was out of date and wasn't built with modern security safeguards. "Users must update the patch MS-17010 provided by Microsoft using the source link http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/security/ms17-010.aspx".

To the editor: If Microsoft were a auto company and released a defective product, there would be mandatory recalls of almost 20-year-old systems and millions of dollars in fines.

To disable it, first search for "Windows features". (These are the most important patches that the company recommends users install immediately).

In addition to the UK's NHS, the WannaCrypt ransomware also hit Spain's Telefonica telco and other companies in Russia, Spain, Taiwan and Ukraine, according to the security firm Malwarebytes.

Shortly after registering the domain, MalwareTech discovered that "our registration of the domain had actually stopped the ransomware and prevent the spread".

For ransomware to work hackers need to download malicious software onto a victims computer.
