Over 50 Palestinians injured during hunger strike solidarity protests: medics

Kenny Thornton | 19 May, 2017, 18:37

A Palestinian man was shot dead by Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank on Thursday, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry.

Dozens of Palestinians were wounded by tear gas and rubber bullets, medics said.

On Tuesday, the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the occupied Palestinian territories, Michael Lynk, stated that force-feeding amounted to torture, adding that administrative detention, or imprisonment without trial, was against worldwide law.

A similar incident occurred the day before near the Palestinian village of Silwad in the West Bank.

Hundreds of Palestinians had gathered at the Huwara checkpoint, south of Nablus and the site of repeated clashes between Israeli soldiers and Palestinian stone-throwers. The Ma'an News Agency quoted an Israeli military spokeswoman as saying that she was unsure whether security forces had detained the shooter.

Led by jailed resistance icon Marwan Barghouti, more than 1,500 Palestinian prisoners began an open-ended hunger strike on April 17 to demand better conditions.

The slain Palestinian is the second to be killed since the detainees' hunger strike started a month ago.

Palestinian witnesses say an Israeli settler opened fire on a crowd of Palestinian protesters after his vehicle was attacked by demonstrators Thursday.

"If the peaceful protests were not active to oblige the occupation to meet the demands and needs of the prisoners, then we will get to the language of force and we are ready to deal with the enemy (Israel) using the language it understands", the statement said. We urge the rest of the global community also to speak up to support the demands of Palestinian prisoners and to insist that Israel immediately enters into serious dialogue with the prisoners about their demands before it is too late.
