Ransomware attacks leads to closure of many ATM's in Vizag

A spokeswoman for Microsoft said it was preparing a response.

Christopher Dore, a lawyer at Edelson PC, said companies hit by the ransomware since they did not have the Microsoft update or were using the older Windows version could face lawsuits. It spreads on its own like a real virus. The official told PTI that most Indian homes were using pirated Operating Softwares which were never updated, making them more vulnerable to the modern day virus threats like ransomware.

Microsoft and the government have said that a Microsoft patch would prevent the attack, but many computers lack that patch.

While Microsoft said that it had already released patches for the vulnerabilities exploited by the leaked tools, another hacking group apparently used one of the leaked tools to create the WannaCry ransomware.

In addition to Microsoft's Security Bulletin MS17-010 that patched the vulnerability in March, the company also issued a separate patch on Friday for users of older and unsupported operating systems such as Windows XP.

In August 2016, a group calling itself The Shadow Brokers began posting materials from that stolen cache of programs online.

Microsoft declined to comment for this story. According to various resources, the attack affected many National Health Service (NHS) hospitals in England and Scotland, and up to 70,000 devices - including computers, MRI scanners, blood-storage refrigerators and theatre equipment - may have been affected. This even as there were reports that "WannaCry" spread globally was slowing down. Infection levels spiked again in both countries this week and remained high through Thursday, according to data supplied to Reuters by threat intelligence firm Kryptos Logic.

The attack was essentially stopped by a researcher called MalwareTech who found an unregistered domain name in the ransomware.

Each person who donates will get a coupon for a free donut., and a $10 donation will get you a free coffee mug. This idea for this particular fundraiser actually came out of IL , and Dunkin' Donuts jumped on board.

"What really makes the magnitude of this attack so much greater than any other is that the intent has changed from information stealing to business disruption", said Samil Neino, 32, chief executive of Los Angeles-based Kryptos Logic.

Police computer systems in the state of Andhra Pradesh have been hit, local media reports say.

Some organizations around the world will likely wake up to computers infected by the ransomware, causing it to potentially spread even further. The company is crunching data to arrive at a firmer estimate it aims to release later Thursday. It has not responded to repeated requests for comment about the ransomware attack.

Don't grumble when your system administrator at work takes the network down periodically to update systems, which usually includes installing new and often critical software patches.

Bossert said he expected the number of people affected would rise as more workers logged into their work computers on Monday.

The software, which spreads among Windows computers, infects and then locks up individual machines, demanding a ransom to be paid in the electronic currency Bitcoin.

However India has said that its vital computer systems largely escaped unscathed because the state organisation that manages nearly all government websites installed patches to immunise its Windows systems.
