Richard Rojas, 26, Identified As Driver In Fatal Crash — Times Square Crash

One person is dead and 22 others were injured near New York City's Times Square after a vehicle plowed into pedestrians on a sidewalk just before lunch hour Thursday.

Here's what you need to know.

Police said he drove his auto for three blocks in Times Square, hitting almost two dozen people, before steel security barriers finally stopped him.

He drove on the sidewalk for there blacks, striking an 18-year-old woman who died of injuries.

The deceased teenager, named in media reports as 18-year-old MI tourist Alyssa Elsman, was walking with her 13-year-old sister, who was injured.

Rojas didn't get far.

Initially, there were fears the incident had been a terrorist attack but investigators discounted that and are focusing on Rojas's sobriety and mental health.

He has previously been discharged from the U.S. Navy following disciplinary problems.

"He's been going through a real tough time", he said.

Rojas enlisted in the Navy in September 2011. In 2012 he served aboard the USS Carney, a destroyer. "She was bright. She was amusing". He was based in Charleston for two months during that time. They do not indicate why. Details were not immediately available.
