Russian news agencies reported Thursday that members of the lower house's foreign affairs committee supported Anatoly Antonov, whose appointment hasn't been officially announced yet.

Mr Comey was ousted just days after he testified on Capitol Hill about the FBI's investigation into Russia's election meddling and possible connections between Russian Federation and Mr Trump's campaign.

"We need the facts".

Trump said he was about to name a replacement for Comey, another effort to settle the waters.

"It was a full flip-flop, going from absolutely "false" to "either confirming or declining to challenge almost every key aspect of the account", the Washington Post said".

Trump referred to Comey's testimony at a recent Capitol Hill hearing, after which the Justice Department ended up having to amend part of his testimony regarding last year's probe of Hillary Clinton's email practices. The West Wing was leaking like a sieve and Trump was powerless to stop it. It is expected to include scrutiny of Trump's fired national security adviser, Michael Flynn, as well as his former campaign manager, Paul Manafort, and two former advisors, Carter Page and Roger Stone, and their contacts with Russian officials.

As for Comey, whom Trump fired last week, the FBI director wrote in a memo after a February meeting at the White House that the new president had asked him to shut down the FBI's investigation of Flynn and his Russian contacts, said a person who had read the memo. "One is, when you're put in this situation, you want to make a record, so if the other side ever tells their story, you can pretty clearly demonstrate with contemporaneous records that you acted appropriately", Miller said. He is a good guy.

"As I have stated many times, a thorough investigation will confirm what we already know - there was no collusion between my campaign and any foreign entity".

"And Comey - he might have had two motives here".

But revelations of just how annoyed Mr Comey was by Mr Trump's behaviour have been revealed in interviews and a blog post written by his close friend Benjamin Wittes.

"That was a poor, poor performance", Trump said.

"While the President has repeatedly expressed his view that General Flynn is a decent man who served and protected our country, the President has never asked Mr. Comey or anyone else to end any investigation, including any investigation involving General Flynn", it said. "But my point is - and I said at the time - is that the investigation into the presidential election should and could continue and was continuing".

The decision by the US Department of Justice to appoint a special prosecutor underscores the serious nature of the allegations of impropriety and abuse of power by President Trump, Congressman Joe Crowley said.

Rosenstein had faced criticism as the author of a memo that preceded Comey's firing.

The House Intelligence Committee on Tuesday asked the Federal Bureau of Investigation for all documents prepared by Comey regarding his conversations with Trump. "I have my subpoena pen ready".
