SACC: Govt has lost moral legitimacy

SACC General Secretary Bishop Malusi Mpumlwana The South African Council of Churches says South Africa is a few inches from becoming a mafia state
Frank Williams | 19 May, 2017, 07:13

The panel was launched in April previous year following the ANC's decision to discontinue its probe into allegations of state capture and public statements made by then finance minister, Mcebisi Jonas, former ANC MP Vytjie Mentor and government spokesperson Themba Maseko into claims of state capture by the controversial Gupta family and the influence they wielded over some state-owned companies and decision taken by the executive.

"The country is going to collapse".

The SACC said the panel was for the benefit of the public to "tell what they wish to tell freely".

SACC launched its "Unburdening Panel" report that put together damning allegations of corruption in various multi-billion rand tenders, including the R50bn Transnet locomotives, nuclear deal, Eskom's coal contracts, and the partnership between VR Laser and Denel.

The Bishop says the outspoken former ANC MP, Vytjie Mentor couldn't be there, due to safety concerns.

It said the work of its Unburdening Panel forms part of the its "Anchoring Democracy" - which is one of five pillars of The South Africa We Pray For campaign of the churches. "For some reason they said they can not guarantee her safety where she is going", says Mpumlwana. "We have now come to learn that what appears to be chaos and instability in government may well be a systemic design of the madness that ills our political environment, a chaotic design", he said.

"A careful analysis makes the case for the following observable trends of inappropriate control of state systems through a power elite that is pivoted around the President of the Republic and is systematically siphoning the assets of the state", Mpumlwana said.

- Securing parallel governance and decision-making structures that undermine the executive.

The South African Council of Churches (SACC) have urged the African Natonal Congress (ANC) to "examine" themselves before the country becomes a "failed state" - something which the SACC believes the country may not recover from.

"What we see at present is the government has lost moral legitimacy".

It will host a media briefing at the Regina Mundi Catholic Church in Soweto to share its findings of the process so far.

The SACC had no desire to lay criminal charges against anyone or embarrass anyone.

The organisation says the panel was created to offer a safe platform for people to provide evidence or information on how they have been pressured by private individuals to act corruptly.

The Council said it therefore had a duty to share this information publicly, ahead of its scheduled National Conference in June 2017.
