Sen. Graham: Trump-Russia probe seems to be criminal investigation

Kenny Thornton | 19 May, 2017, 15:59

Durbin and other lawmakers said Rosenstein did not indicate who in the Trump administration told him to write the memo with the rationale for ousting Comey. Durbin said Rosenstein learned on May 8.

Last week, Trump fired Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey.

Mr. Trump said Comey's most recent testimony before Congress on May 3 was a "poor, poor performance", which he said directly led to the Deputy Attorney General writing a letter that raised questions about Comey's job performance.

But Trump himself has already said that he was going to fire Comey regardless of any recommendation by the Justice Department.

At a press conference later on Thursday, Trump said, "I respect the move but the entire thing is a witch hunt".

"I think one of the reasons people get so concerned about the tweets is it's sort of a way around the press", Cheney explained. Moments before Trump weighed in on Twitter, Democratic Senator Joe Manchin welcomed the special counsel investigation and said it was important to get facts in the Russian Federation probe.

One day earlier, Sanders told ABC News chief anchor George Stephanopoulos on "This Week", "I don't think we're there yet" for potentially appointing a special prosecutor. "Additionally, the ongoing investigations by the both the Senate and House must continue". But at the same time, White House officials have been discussing bringing in additional legal counsel to deal with the growing probe, according to the New York Times.

"Typically, you go through a congressional oversight review. Not completely, but pretty much", Graham said. If I get what I want, it'll be the biggest tax cut in the history of our nation.

Trump fired Comey last week. He did not offer any evidence of such acts in his reference to Democratic former President Barack Obama and former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.

"I didn't hear anything classified" during the briefing, Graham said. Asked if the appointment of a special counsel would delay the investigation, committee Chair Sen.

Senator Chris Murphy, a Connecticut Democrat, said Rosenstein wasn't prepared to outline other circumstances surrounding the firing of Comey out of his belief that it could come within the territory of Mueller's investigation.

"Director Comey was very unpopular with most people".

"I don't think that there's a necessary need at this point to add that", Sanders said.

President Donald Trump, striking a defiant tone on Thursday after days of political tumult, denied colluding with Russian Federation during his 2016 campaign or asking former FBI Director James Comey to drop a probe into his former national security adviser.

Sanders said on "This Week" that Congress should complete its review first, which she said she is confident will show that Trump associates had not involvement in Russia's actions.

The meeting, at which all senators were free to ask questions and make statements, had been expected to be contentious as anger flared over Comey's dismissal and Rosenstein's possible role in it.
