A medical examiner has determined that Soundgarden singer Chris Cornell killed himself by hanging in a Detroit hotel room following a concert.
A full autopsy report was not yet completed Thursday afternoon.
Two Detroit newspapers citing a police spokesman are reporting that Cornell was found with "a band around his neck".
A spokesperson for the Detroit Police Department wouldn't identify the victim, but told ABC News the victim's wife called a family friend to check on the victim. We mean, mere hours before his death, Chris was performing with Soundgarden at the Fox Theatre.
Cornell, who was known for his dynamic vocals, which ranged from a soft melodic croon to a window-shattering scream, started his career with the cover band the Shemps, which also featured bassist Hiro Yamamoto and later, guitarist Kim Thayil.
The Grammy-winning rocker had performed Wednesday night at the Fox Theatre in Detroit. An autopsy is being conducted Thursday and some information from it is expected to be released later in the day, Wayne County spokeswoman Lisa Croff said. The album marked Cornell's gap period between leaving Soundgarden and forming Audioslave, and was a critical success.
Soundgarden launched a North American tour on April 28 in Tampa Florida and were scheduled to remain on the road through May 27. Police say he died at the MGM Grand Detroit hotel and that his death is being investigated as a possible suicide.
Audioslave disbanded in 2007, but Cornell and Soundgarden reunited in 2010 and released the band's sixth studio album, "King Animal" in 2012.
Detroit police spokesman Michael Woody told The Associated Press Thursday morning that he couldn't release details about why police are investigating the death as a possible suicide, but noted that there were "basic things observed at the scene". He says Cornell's wife called a family friend and asked him to check on Cornell. Woody says the friend forced open a hotel room door and found Cornell on the bathroom floor. The band tweeted Wednesday night a quote from Cornell: "What I look forward to the most...is the camaraderie".
The Wayne County Medical Examiner's office will make an official determination about the cause of death.
