Soundgarden singer Chris Cornell dies aged 52

Frank Williams | 19 May, 2017, 15:18

He said that more details would be released in a statement later Thursday.

The American singer is best known as the lead vocalist and primary songwriter for Seattle-based band Soundgarden, who achieved worldwide notoriety with their 1994 album Superunknown. The band released their first single "Hunted Down" on Subpop in 1987. The group's debut album, "Ultramega OK", came a year later.

With his powerful, almost four-octave vocal range, Cornell was one of the leading voices of the 1990s grunge movement with Soundgarden, which emerged as one of the biggest bands out of Seattle's emerging music scene, joining the likes of Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains. He was just 52 years old.

He reunited with Soundgarden in 2010 and they released a sixth studio album, King Animal, two years later. The first grunge band to sign a record contract with a major label, Soundgarden played a paramount role setting in motion the cultural winds of the grunge wave that shaped alternative culture in the 1990s.

Chris Cornell, lead singer of Soundgarden and Audioslave, died Wednesday night, his representative told CNN.

Dave Navarro of Jane's Addiction tweeted that he was stunned by the death.

Without Cornell and the musical brilliance he's privileged us with, the passion which burned within the core of every driven individual and budding artist in the 90's wouldn't have been as powerful as it was.

"That was the toughest time in my life", he told Rolling Stone.

Third was Moldova's SunStroke Project with a raucous song called "Hey, Mamma". He reached a total of 758 points (382 jury points and 376 televote points).

Cornell also had an extensive solo career as a singer, guitarist, composer and lyricist and worked with various other musicians over three decades in the music business. His song "Seasons" was on the soundtrack of "Singles", the Cameron Crowe film which he also appeared in.

The band broke up in 1997 but later reformed.

In Cuba, Chris Cornell will be remembered by thousands for the 2005 Havana Audioslave concert that was "a once-in-a-lifetime experience".

The Grammy-winning rocker had performed Wednesday night at the Fox Theatre in Detroit. "I really didn't think the same after I left", he said.

"I've lost a lot of young, brilliant friends, people that I thought were very inspired", he said.

RIP Chris Cornell, and thank you.
