The American singer is best known as the lead vocalist and primary songwriter for Seattle-based band Soundgarden, who achieved worldwide notoriety with their 1994 album Superunknown. The band released their first single "Hunted Down" on Subpop in 1987. The group's debut album, "Ultramega OK", came a year later.
With his powerful, almost four-octave vocal range, Cornell was one of the leading voices of the 1990s grunge movement with Soundgarden, which emerged as one of the biggest bands out of Seattle's emerging music scene, joining the likes of Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains. He was just 52 years old.
He reunited with Soundgarden in 2010 and they released a sixth studio album, King Animal, two years later. The first grunge band to sign a record contract with a major label, Soundgarden played a paramount role setting in motion the cultural winds of the grunge wave that shaped alternative culture in the 1990s.

Cornell also had an extensive solo career as a singer, guitarist, composer and lyricist and worked with various other musicians over three decades in the music business. His song "Seasons" was on the soundtrack of "Singles", the Cameron Crowe film which he also appeared in.
The band broke up in 1997 but later reformed.
