Suspicion: Massive cyber attack caused by North Korea

Frank Williams | 19 May, 2017, 11:07

According to him, North Korea has been using malicious computer programs to mine bitcoins as early as 2013, which means it is not a novice to the world of digital currency.

The attacks, which slowed on Monday, are among the fastest-spreading extortion campaigns on record.

"We believe this might hold the key to solve some of the mysteries around this attack", the Moscow-based cybersecurity firm Kaspersky Labs said in an analysis of a few lines of duplicated code found in an earlier version of the WannaCry virus, which was first noticed by a Google security researcher. WannaCry also includes software that was stolen from the US National Security Agency [official website] and illegally published online in April.

Cybersecurity experts around the world are saying that they found circumstantial evidence that could link North Korea to the WannaCry ransomware attack.

Computer codes are often shared among different groups, so the matching code isn't definitive proof Lazarus was behind the cyberattack.

The attack has caused most damage in Russia, Taiwan, Ukraine and India, according to Czech security firm Avast.

USA and European security officials told Reuters on condition of anonymity that it was too early to say who might be behind the attacks, but they did not rule out North Korea as a suspect. Lazarus has also been linked to the hacking of Sony Pictures [official website] in 2014 and accused of stealing millions of dollars from a Bangladeshi bank in 2016.

To the editor: The goal of the recent ransomware attack that appears to have emanated from North Korea was clearly not to extort a few thousand dollars from the victims.

Several Asian countries have been affected by the malware, although the impact has not been as widespread as some had feared. "We should never underestimate it", Choi said.
