The Warriors destroy the Spurs, 136-100

Rita Gibson | 19 May, 2017, 19:32

The Warriors wasted no time putting themselves in the driver's seat, as Draymond Green followed Kevin Durant's ice-breaking jumper with a 3-pointer to give the Dubs a 5-0 lead two minutes into the game, and they never looked back from there.

Stephen Curry No.30 of the Golden State Warriors is fouled by Dewayne Dedmon No.3 of the San Antonio Spurs during Game 2 of the NBA Western Conference finals at ORACLE Arena on Wednesday in Oakland, California.

Two days after falling behind by 25 points in the first half to a Leonard-led team, the Warriors had a 25-point lead of their own in the 16th minute of the rematch en route to a 72-44 halftime advantage.

The Warriors rarely start two straight games poorly, so you figured they'd be locked in to open Game 2. Once again, Simmons provided the juice to keep the Spurs involved, but the Warriors bench of Ian Clark and Patrick McCaw matched the Spurs hustle and kept the margin up for the Warriors.

Popovich was left perplexed and downright disgusted that his team got dominated in such embarrassing fashion without Leonard, who re-injured his tender left ankle in Game 1 after stepping on Pachulia's foot. LaMarcus Aldridge finished the game with just eight points, Pau Gasol scored just seven points while Patty Mills had just five points as the Spurs shot just 37 percent from the field and eight of 23 from the three-point line.

By dominating Game 2, the Warriors looked like the same team that had steamrolled their opponents in the first two rounds of the playoffs, and to a flawless 8-0 record coming into their matchup with San Antonio.

Game 3 takes place at San Antonio on Saturday and Brown has already warned the Warriors to expect a response in Texas.

Nearly immediately after Leonard exited the game, some wondered if Pachulia had intentionally slipped his foot under the two-time All-Star in order to deliberately hurt him. Klay Thompson still didn't have a breakout game - scoring only 11 after mustering only six points in Game 1 - but he did plant a pair of 3s.

Brown then revealed that Spurs coach Gregg Popovich phoned him from the team bus to poke fun.

The Warriors have won 25 of 26 overall, and on many nights have annihilated the competition. After losing both ways in the first two games of the series, Ginobili must now understand that the Spurs played much better in Game 1 of this series even if it ended in a loss.

The Warriors are well on their way to a 2-0 lead over the Spurs.

Curry also collected seven rebounds and seven assists in the comfortable victory as the Western Conference No. 1 seeded side took a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven game series. In just his last three games alone, he's scored 99 points on just 54 shots. "It's risky, it's unsportsmanlike, it's just not what anybody does to anybody else", Popovich said. And you have to believe. But I'm hoping that's not true and we'll have him for Game 3. "We have a good training staff that's working with him and try to get that ankle right".
